I have seen many people making skins just for the special skin (number 3)only. There is a technical reason? Something about the incompatibility of textures I heard.
Usually something to do with the MREC. Part of the game data that controls how the aircraft materials handle light. If a mod contains MREC modification, usually the modder will only make it for Skin 2 or Skin 3 since any modification to Skin 1 will also affect Skin 4 5 and 6.
