The Khandayats of Kalinga are a community of people who hail from the eastern Indian state of Odisha. They are primarily concentrated in the districts of Puri, Khurda, Cuttack, and Jagatsinghpur. The term "Khandayat" is derived from the Sanskrit word "khanda," meaning sword, which reflects their ancestral occupation as warriors.

The Khandayats of Kalinga are said to be descendants of the ancient Kshatriya or warrior caste of India. They claim to be the followers of Lord Jagannath and were responsible for the management of the famous Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha.

In the past, the Khandayats were known for their bravery and served as soldiers and commanders in the armies of the kings of Odisha. They played a significant role in the defense of Kalinga against foreign invaders, including the Mughals and the British.

The Khandayats of Kalinga have a rich cultural heritage, which is reflected in their language, literature, music, and dance. They have their own dialect, known as Khandayatia, which is a mixture of Sanskrit, Odia, and other regional languages. They also have a rich tradition of folk music and dance forms, such as Ghoda Nacha, Dalkhai, and Chaiti Ghoda.

The Khandayats of Kalinga celebrate many festivals throughout the year, including Durga Puja, Diwali, Holi, and Raja Parba. Raja Parba is a unique festival celebrated by the Khandayats, which is dedicated to the fertility of the earth and the well-being of women. It is a three-day festival celebrated during the onset of monsoon.

In recent times, the Khandayats of Kalinga have diversified their occupations and are engaged in various professions. Many of them are farmers, businessmen, and government officials. However, their warrior spirit is still evident in their culture and traditions.

The Khandayats of Kalinga have made significant contributions to the history and culture of Odisha. They are proud of their heritage and continue to uphold their traditions and values in the present day. The Khandayats are an integral part of Odisha's cultural landscape and continue to be a source of inspiration and pride for the people of the state.
