Report RSS WMHD's First Look @ Bioshock: Infinite

Posted by on

Bioshock: Infinite is certainly one of those games that had us curious from the start, mainly because it had an interesting trailer.
I, personally, found myself wondering, really and truly wondering, what this game was all about.
As intrigued as I found myself to be from the trailers, I made a conscious decision to not find out tons of information about the game before its release, instead opting to find out the way the Developers intended...whilst playing.

From the first cut-scene, I discovered quite a lot of information from the two companions in the boat. I know that it was done in such a way, that probably a lot of people would not pick up on what was being said. For those of us who did listen to their conversation however, it was a little bit disappointing to have the experience, not yet experienced, explained!
Anyway, despite that, the game has you really wondering what is going to take place and what were going to have to do, etc etc. So from the opening Lighthouse Scene, you are really ready to go through this experience with the main character "Booker".

Personally, I have always enjoyed a good adventure game, and Bioshock: Infinite is certainly an adventure.
It is surreal, engaging and at times even humorous. There is also a very extreme moral tale weaved into the drama, and that is the extreme nature of Racism and Religion.
As Booker, we very quickly discover we are in a world of people who have separated themselves from the rest of humanity, and feel that they are living by the will and laws of God, through a self-proclaimed prophet, who leads them in all they do, and believe.
I actually had no clue that these elements were in the game, and found it to be quite a shock when playing the Raffle Scene. Which is where we discover the nature of the people around us. It did make the commencing battle all the more exciting for me. Especially since I am a woman of colour, who has grown up in a family of predominantly caucasian people, very much loved certainly, but had very different experiences from what the majority around me could identify with. Bioshock: Infinite does blow up the racist elements towards both people of colour and the Irish also, drawing from the experiences of blatant and extreme racism from the past. there is hope however in the form of Booker and the girl he is rescuing Elizabeth, who seems to have some kind of special powers...what they are as of yet I do not know, this is only my initial first look!

At this moment in time I have found the game play to be acceptable. The melee attack option can be tricky because of the scale and speed of your opponents, but at the same time you are given a flurry of magical powers to make the action more engaging. The lock on targeting seems fine, I have had not too many issues with that, and I like the fact that when you die, you are shown things that raise more questions in the mind of the player, only to have us taken straight back to the area we were at when we died! That's a great addition!!
The only real issue I have is with running! The design is done in such a way that if you are running in a straight line you are fine, but the minute you have to turn whilst you run,...that can cause all kinds of problems with control. It may just be me, but....I don't think so! lol
Anyway, this was our First Look, at the moment were enjoying the game, and we will give you all a proper full review once the game is completed.

Thank you for your time,
All the best,
