Some games take real-life events, people, or ideas and use them as the basis of the story. In The Mystery of Oak Island we take on the centuries-old legend of a supposed treasure long buried in the soil of the island off of Nova Scotia.

What seeds were planted in the past to make this fabled treasure so special? The mystery of Oak Island begins in 1795 when three men stumbled upon a circular depression that was obviously man-made. And being of the curious sort they dug deeper and basically uncovered more secrets. Eventually they got as deep as they could without tools and had to abandon the search.

Later on they did manage to acquire the necessary equipment but this expedition met with disaster. The tunnels flooded thanks to several ingenious traps. Just what could be buried down there that warranted such a security system? It certainly had to be valuable to go to such lengths. And so the treasure hunt began. This area has since been known as the “Money Pit”.

There are a number of theories surrounding the mystery of Oak Island but it seems that Visionaire might be going with the pirate treasure angle since one of the playable characters appears to be a sailor of sorts. That said, the true treasure (assuming there really is a treasure to be found) can be pretty much anything as no concrete evidence has been found as to who or what dug the pit.

Over the centuries there have been several attempts to get to the heart of the mystery of Oak Island but each has failed miserably. To date there have been six casualties and each perished under strange and unexplained circumstances. There is a legend that in order for the truth to be found a seventh life must be sacrificed. Will Jamie Watson, one of the playable characters and the one smack dab in the middle of the island, be the fabled seventh or will this “curse” be successfully lifted and the treasure once and for all found?

Since very little has been found since the late 18th century one might wonder if there’s actually anything down in the pit at all. Or even if this whole area was dug by human hands. For all we know this could be a natural phenomenon. Even if something does lie buried there’s also a good chance that there is no form of currency but rather some other long-lost artifact from European explorers. One popular theory is that the Knights Templar brought the Holy Grail to rest on the island, which could also explain the “seven must die” prophecy. Regardless, whatever the mystery of Oak Island is it’s certainly sparked a lot of interest since first discovered.

A a fan of games with a historic bent or that have a focus on real-world legends you might want to check out The Mystery of Oak Island, that certainly falls into that category. Even Charles Cecil of Broken Sword fame wanted to tackle this myth.
