Minerva Armored Car

300px Automitrailleuse Minerva

The Minerva Armored Car was a militairy armored car expediently developed from Minerva civilian automobiles by Belgium at the start of the First World War.

scm02

The Minerva's use in combat in August 1914 made Belgium one of the first nations to employ armoured cars in the World War I, though Italy had previously been the first to use armoured cars in a theatre of conflict, in the 1911–1912 Italo-Turkish War.

During the war those that could afford to rode to battle on their own horses, much like this in 1914, Lieutenant Charles Henkart arranged for two of his civilian Minerva Motor Works tourers to be armoured at the Cockerill Works in Hoboken. The initial armoured cars were adhoc but soon Minerva had created a standard design. American papers were reporting the use of the armoured car by September 1914. The crew was partially exposed to gun fire with the open top. This would prove fatal to Lieutenant Henkart when on September 6, 1914 he was killed by gun fire after the armoured car he was in was caught in a German ambush. Before the Minerva factory was captured during the German invasion and occupation of Belgium about thirty Minerva armored cars were built. In 1916 the design of the original armored car was completely revised. The open top was now fully enclosed and the machine gun under an armored cupola. The Belgian Army used the cars as motorized cavalry units with three-cars platoons. The armoured car units were mostly used for reconnaissance, infantry fire support and missions behind enemy lines. After the Western Front became bogged down in trench warfare some of the cars were sent to the Eastern Front with the Belgian expeditionary corps in Russia.

2075

The Germans were able capture three of the cars and modified them for use during the invasion of Romania with at least one being used during the 1919 troubles. They even saw use in the Spanish Civil War in the late 1930s.

In WO1 we didn't had tanks, the French and especially British had them on the allied side, but we do had artillery. Also when the war went into trench war the armored cars weren't of big use anymore

The present Belgian army doesn't have tanks either, we don't really need them

I understand
I was afraid of this , that you were not having tanks
Artillery is good enough
Let us hope it will never come the day for you to need them indeed

Yes, I hope that aswell
But if so, we have enough allies who have them. And tanks are actually for bad and difficult reachable terrain, we almost don't have that in Belgium, so we don't really need tanks ourself in defence

And when the Belgian army interfere in international conficts it mostly has a support role, like in Mali, in support of the French

Hey bebe` i visited the LOTR group too you are part of but it seems quiet there , nobody said anything
I think is modlord's group
Maybe will join it sometime if is a fun place

Not sure if UN or the USA will not abandon its allies like they are known for once they don't need them anymore
But perhaps nobody will attack Flanders and if it happens you will all fight with the fury of the Celts like Cuchulain :D
Just generating good morale for you is all

Ah...i had no idea about that
War campaigns in Africa , i understand

See you back on our favorite spots but it feels good visiting your home too

It's a fun place, but quiet

I'm not proud of it but Belgium is actually one of the USA's closest allies... But we are friends with the French, British and Dutch aswell and the Germans aren't unfriendly

Julius Ceasar once said thet the Belgae tribes, Gauls/Celts living in the region now called belgium, then Belgica where the bravest of all Gaulisch/ Celtic people. That must count for something. We are not with many and we don't have the best equipment but we do everything to protect our home in greater need

Everybody is an ally in the West afterall (:

Nice ! You were tougher in the past , i give you that
Is like nowadays everyone just grown soft , maybe perhaps of the weapons that do the fight for you
In the past you were enemies with the British , or the French were

I think you also excelled in the times of the older nations of Europe , but after the time of the Gauls and Celts i think , when Flanders was named Flanders and the Papal States , Wales , Burgundy and the others were kicking it back then as well
Is then when the Flemish architecture was done right ?

In this times, yes I think

I can't agree more
We never where real enemies with the British, but for the French that's a whole different story... hahah

I would say it started in the early medievals, the buildings on as example on your blog are from around 1250-1350 I think

It says that in a war or in a normal fight , is best you are in good relations with your neighbours more than someone from far away
They can reach you for help sooner and for the sake of having peace at the borders

How come the Dutch mixed up with you ? The Dutch are like supposed to be people apart from both French and Flemish
Perhaps in this case it was a friendly neighbourly relation gone too far lol

Wow ! They sure are old but i think are used fine to this day
I just go crazy for modern pubs and such that are in the space of a historical building
Europe is really good at maintaining class

But now the French and Dutch are our closest allies

A lot of people think the Flemish are similar to the Dutch, but we are actually completely different, we have only kinda the same language

I have the same feeling

Awesome

You know i always thought Belgium is a second France , not at all a second Netherlands
I just hope you were not like..forced to adopt the dutch language

Awesome !

Nothing is adopted, we just spoke that language from the very start

And Belgium is kinda a mixture of France and Holland, not a second one hahah. But we are actually not a real country, more a state of 2 combined minorities (Flemish and Walloons)

The French speaking Belgians
Let's say like the French but more silent, and most of them don't really like to work, they more like to strike... there are only few similarities beteen the Flemish and the Walloons

This is why you were not speaking french like i expected but dutch
You are Flemish not Walloon

Hey i think they are cool if they don't like work . I mean who does because is slavery just for enough cash to keep you fed enough for next month of work and so on
We work because we have to but we don't have to like it too
And liking to strike is also good because it means they are not submitting to the mongering system
I think i like them already :D
All i hope is that you are friends between eachother in the country

Most Flemish don't really like to work either (I don't like it either), but the problem is that the Walloons strike too often, soo the Flemish need to work harder and pay more taxes... stupid government...

But I think its great to like your job, times pass quiker then

More taxes is robbery no matter how you put it but at least your leaders might not be so bad as other places

Ideally to have the job you want , doing the work you love and get paid as much you want too

Let's say i would love becoming a game developer with my own team even if small , making kickass games and then getting big sales for it and both the world and me & team to be happy
Could be fun

Is more good to be a owner of something , to have a small business rather than a job where you are just employed
