Did no one after seeing this say "You know what, lets not go along with this tank, its a silly idea."
If I recall correctly, this tank was designed so it would not be knocked over if a nuke went off nearby, and that would have been seen as a benefit in the 1950's.

It was a simpler time back then (during the 50s). Weird designs had a chance back then and not just some slabs of regtangles like most modern tanks...
And it has no real advantages over any contemporary designs...
