May I be the first to say, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TOLKIEN! Rest in peace, Tolkien.
Died at the age of 81, September 2, 1973. Born in January 3, 1892

Now some quotes/poems by him or from the Books.

All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king

“I do not love the bright sword for it's sharpness, nor the arrow for it's swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend” - Tolkien

“I don't know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.” - Bilbo Baggins

“Courage is found in unlikely places.” - Tolkien

“Remember what Bilbo used to say: "It's a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don't keep your feet, there's no knowing where you might be swept off to.” -Frodo Baggins

“Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement. For even the very wise cannot see all ends.” Gandalf the White to Peregrin Took.

"Hold your ground, hold your ground. Sons of Gondor, of Rohan, my brothers. I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me. A day may come when the courage of men fails, when we forsake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship, but it is not this day. An hour of wolves and shattered shields, when the age of men comes crashing down, but it is not this day. This day we fight! For all that you hold dear on this good Earth, I bid you stand, Men of the West!" - Aragorn, The Black Gate Opens

"Arise, riders of Théoden! Spears shall be shaken, shields shall be splintered, a sword-day, a red-day, ere the sun rises! Ride now! Ride now! Ride! Ride for ruin and the world's ending! Death! Death! Death! Forth Éorlingas!" - Théoden, King of Rohan, son of Thengel. Pellenor Fields

"In western lands beneath the Sun the flowers may rise in Spring, the trees may bud, the waters run, the merry finches sing. Or there maybe 'tis cloudless night and swaying beeches bear the Elven-stars as jewels white amid their branching hair. Though here at journey's end I lie in darkness buried deep, beyond all towers strong and high, beyond all mountains steep, above all shadows rides the Sun and Stars for ever dwell: I will not say the day is done nor bid the stars farewell."

"I made a promise, Mr Frodo. A promise. "Don't you leave him Samwise Gamgee." And I don't mean to. I don't mean to." -Samwise Gamgee

"Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,
Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die,
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
He paused, and then said in a deep voice,
"This is the Master-Ring, the One Ring to rule them all.
This is the One Ring lost many years ago,
to the great weakening of its maker's power.
Now, he greatly desires to have it again,
- but he must NOT get it" -Gandalf, Shadow of the Past

“Fool of a Took! Throw yourself in next time, and rid us of your stupidity!” Gandalf, The mines of Moria.

“I can avoid being seen if I wish, but to disappear entirely, that is a rare gift.” Strider, At the Sign of the Prancing Pony.

"A wizard is never late, nor is he early, he arrives precisely when he means to.” -Gandalf the Grey.

"You will unite or you will fall.” -Lord Elrond of Rivendell. The Council of Elrond

"Men... Men are weak." -Lord Elrond of Rivendell. The Council of Elrond

“The quest stands upon the edge of a knife. Stray but a little and it will fail. But hope remains, if friends stay true.” -Lady Galadriel. Lothlorien

"If by my life or death I can protect you, I will. You have my sword..." -Aragorn son of Arathorn, Council of Elrond *To Frodo*
"And you have my bow" -Legolas of the Woodland Realm, Council of Elrond *To Frodo*
"And my axe!" -Gimli son of Gloin, Council of Elrond *To Frodo*
"You carry the fate of us all, little one. If this is indeed the will of the Council, then Gondor will see it done." Boromir Captain of Gondor, son of the Steward, Denethor II. The Council of Elrond. *To Frodo*

"Nine companions. So be it. You shall be the fellowship of the ring." -Lord Elrond of Rivendell, the Council of Elrond *To the Fellowship*

"I never thought I'd die fighting side-by-side with an elf." Gimli to Legolas, the Black Gate opens
"How about side-by-side with a friend?" Legolas to Gimli, The Black Gate Opens
"Aye, I can do that." Gimli to Legolas, The Black Gate Opens

"Let's hunt some orc!" Aragorn, The Breaking of the Fellowship"

"Certainty of death, small chance of success, what are we waiting for?" Gimli.

"One does not simply walk into Mordor. Its black gates are guarded by
more than just Orcs. There is evil there that does not sleep. The great
Eye is ever watchful. It is a barren wasteland, riddled with fire, ash,
and dust. The very air you breathe is a poisonous fume. Not with
ten-thousand men could you do this. It is folly." Boromir, The Council of Elrond

"A Balrog. A demon of the ancient world. This foe is beyond any of you. Run!" Gandalf, the bridge of Khazad Dum

"Gondor has no King. Gondor needs no King." Boromir, The Council of Elrond

"It is a gift. A gift to the foes of Mordor. Why not use this ring? Long
has my father, the Steward of Gondor, kept the forces of Mordor at bay.
By the blood of our people are your lands kept safe. Give Gondor the
weapon of the enemy. Let us use it against him." Boromir, The Council of Elrond

Now, my favorite "Faithless is he who says farewell when the road darkens" Gimli.

Ash Nazg Durbatuluk, Ash Nazg Gimbatul, Ash Nazg Thrakatuluk, Agh Burzum-ishi Krimpatul.

"Remember today little brother. Today, life is good!" Boromir to Faramir

"No Man can kill me!" Me/Witch King of Angmar

"I am no man!" Eowyn.

"You cannot hide. I see you. There is no life in the void. Only death." One of my favs. GUESS!

"Do you not know death when you see it, old man? This is my hour!" Witch King to Gandalf

"The board is set... the pieces are moving" Gandalf

" This will be the end of Gondor as we know it. Here the hammer-stroke will fall hardest." Gandalf

" So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to
decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given
to us. There are other forces at work in this world Frodo, besides the
will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you were
also meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought."

"You cannot pass! I am a servant of the Secret Fire, wielder of the Flame
of Anor. The dark fire will not avail you, Flame of Udun! Go back to
the shadow. You shall not pass!"

"The power of the enemy is growing. Sauron will use his puppet Saruman to
destroy the people of Rohan. Isengard has been unleashed. The Eye of
Sauron now turns to Gondor, the last free kingdom of men. His war on
this country will come swiftly. He senses the Ring is close. The
strength of the Ringbearer is failing. In his heart, Frodo begins to
understand. The quest will claim his life. You know this. You have
foreseen it. It is the risk we all took. In the gathering dark, the will
of the Ring grows strong. It works hard now to find its way back into
the hands of men. Men, who are so easily seduced by its power. The young
captain of Gondor has but to extend his hand, take the Ring for his own
and the world will fall. It is close now, so close to achieving its
goal. For Sauron will have dominion over all life on this Earth, even
unto the ending of the world. The time of the elves is over. Do we leave
Middle-Earth to its fate? Do we let them stand alone?

"From the lowest dungeon to the highest peak I fought with the Balrog of
Morgoth... Until at last I threw down my enemy and smote his ruin upon
the mountain side... Darkness took me, and I strayed out of thought and
time... The stars wheeled overhead, and every day was as long as a life
age of the earth... But it was not the end. I felt life in me again.
I've been sent back until my task is done.

" I will find no rest here. I heard her voice inside my head. She spoke
of my father and the fall of Gondor. She said to me, even now, there is
hope left, but I cannot see it. It is long since we had any hope. My
father is a noble man, but his rule is failing, and our people lose
faith. He looks to me to make things right and I would do it. I would
see the glory of Gondor restored. Have you ever seen it, Aragorn? The
White Tower of Ecthelion, glimmering like a spike of pearl and silver,
its banners caught high in the morning breeze. Have you ever been called
home by the clear ringing of silver trumpets?"

"It began with the forging of the Great Rings. Three were given to the
Elves; immortal, wisest and fairest of all beings. Seven, to the Dwarf
Lords, great miners and craftsmen of the mountain halls. And nine, nine
rings were gifted to the race of Men, who above all else desire power.
For within these rings was bound the strength and the will to govern
over each race. But they were all of them deceived, for a new ring was
made. In the land of Mordor, in the fires of Mount Doom, the Dark Lord
Sauron forged in secret, a master ring, to control all others. And into
this ring he poured all his cruelty, his malice and his will to dominate
all life. One ring to rule them all. One by one, the free peoples of
Middle Earth fell to the power of the Ring. But there were some who
resisted. A last alliance of men and elves marched against the armies of
Mordor, and on the very slopes of Mount Doom, they fought for the
freedom of Middle-Earth. Victory was near, but the power of the ring
could not be undone. It was in this moment, when all hope had faded,
that Isildur, son of the king, took up his father's sword. And Sauron,
enemy of the free peoples of Middle-Earth, was defeated. The Ring passed
to Isildur, who had this one chance to destroy evil forever, but the
hearts of men are easily corrupted. And the ring of power has a will of
its own. It betrayed Isildur, to his death. And some things that should
not have been forgotten were lost. History became legend. Legend became
myth. And for two and a half thousand years, the ring passed out of all
knowledge. Until, when chance came, the ring ensnared another bearer.
The ring came to the creature Gollum, who took it deep into the tunnels
under the Misty Mountains, and there it consumed him. The ring gave to
Gollum unnatural long life. For five hundred years it poisoned his mind;
and in the gloom of Gollum's cave, it waited. Darkness crept back into
the forests of the world. Rumor grew of a shadow in the East, whispers
of a nameless fear, and the Ring of Power perceived. Its time had now
come. It abandoned Gollum. But then something happened that the Ring did
not intend. It was picked up by the most unlikely creature imaginable. A
hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, of the Shire. For the time will soon come when
hobbits will shape the fortunes of all..."

*sigh* A bit too much maybe. Could've gotten at least 50 more.
Both from movies and books

Rest in peace Tolkien. And Happy birthday!

I don't think Tolkien will be resting in peace, he'll be rolling in his grave at the thought that a hobbit movie's being made. ;)

He is resting in peace, but will be Unexpectedly woken up by 13 Dwarves, a wizard, and a Hobbit. He will have an Unexpected Journey to the Cinemas and will be seeing The Hobbit, and will be there once more for another year, and back again to his grave, thinking of what to write about the 4th Age, until he falls asleep and rests in peace.
