The unfinished build's of They Hunger: Lost Soul's. Important information down below.
They Hunger: Lost Souls was the Source Engine sequel to the original They Hunger trilogy, developed by BlackWidowGames. It was in development from early 2005 to atleast 2009, if not later. For unknown reasons, it was never officially released.
These 2 builds are not fully representative of all the work made for the project. For example: story, dialogue, and characters are non-existent as none of it was implemented yet. Many maps in the campaign were also purposefully removed before the builds were sent to the developer who worked on them.
In the 2008/04/02 build there is an error in which all particle effects (for example, fire) do not display at their proper locations. This is unfixable without modifying the source code, which is not currently possible.
NOTE: To fix some other graphical bugs in the 2008/04/02 build, run the game with the launch command "-dxlevel 80"
With all of that in mind, hopefully these builds have some historical interest for those out there who have wondered for all these years where They Hunger: Lost Souls went.
Also contained in this file (below the installation instructions) is a small guide to the game's console commands and spawnable entities.
NOTE: To play these builds, you need atleast 3 GB of free space AND the following Steam games/tools installed:
- Source SDK Base 2006
- Source SDK Base 2007
- Counter-Strike: Source
The included Readme with this file includes installation instructions as well as entity names to fiddle with if you so desire as well as additional information.
This is the official end of the line for They Hunger: Lost Soul's, and speaking as someone who joyfully anticipated this release 10 years ago, I hope these builds brings some closure to They Hunger fans everywhere.
If the remnants of Black Widow Games or even Neil Manke himself request this be taken down, then I will oblige with their request.
Can't help but sigh. I remember scouting out the BWG's website back in 2005 for any update and the silence from 2008 and onward sealed that companies fate.
This release brings closure I suppose. But hey, I'd take something over nothing.
I hope someone eventually uses those assets to make a full game out of this. It's not like BWG is gonna work on it any time soon anyway.
It wouldn't be too hard to do though. However, it would take a team of people willing to work on it without what happened to Opposing Force 2 alongside the drama that came with it. Personally, I wouldn't mind writing the story for They Hunger 2.
I don't know how you found this, but I'm very glad you did. n,n

So I did everything the automatic installation required, have Counter-Strike: Source and both SDKs installed, entered the correct paths, waited for each step to complete, and this happened when I began the 2006 build.

I checked in "hunger_css_content", the process extracted the folders inside, but they're all empty. So I had to do the manual extraction anyway. Can't know for sure if the process was faulty or my computer messed up, but if someone else has this problem, the empty folders is a possible reason.
Huh, you may need to extract the models from Counter-Strike to your models folder in the They Hunger Folder. But it's been awhile since I last played this and that map in particular may not have the propel models in the build.
Currently, kirillka77734 is attempting to patch up these builds as some kind of "Definitive" edition with bug-fixes and map-add's but progress is slow. You can check it out here! Moddb.com
