Notes for Skorzeny's modified CC4 files. Version 1.0, 04-10-2000. The purpose of this mod is to make it possible to play with more historically correct german battle groups. Atomics original files included battle groups which sometimes differed greatly from the historical counterparts in terms of both unit composition and the number of available units of each type. This mod won't give you control over 100 percent historically correct battle groups, since the game system requires all the battle groups of a division to draw replacement units from the same force pool. This makes it almost impossible to earmark cetain unit types for one particular battle group. Therefore attrition will decide where the replacements go.
I must point out that I haven't had time to perform any major play balance test yet! Is is likely that playing with these modified files will change the play balance slightly in favor of the german side. Some weak battle groups have received more powerful units, while I have lowered the total number of available units for several unit types in the force pools.

List of performed changes:
A. 1 SS Panzer Division:
* Force pool:
Removed most of the armored cars, except for between six and ten PSW 234/2 (Puma). Historically the 1st SS had only six Pumas in KG Knittel. The divison didn't have any PzKw VIE's or StuG III's, so I have removed these from the force pool as well. Added a few Command Jagdpanzer IV/70's which will be used in KG Hansen.
* Battle group commander ranks:
- Obersturmbannfuhrer Peiper
- Standartenfuhrer Hansen
- Sturmbannfuhrer Knittel
* KG Peiper:
Substituted one heavy tank slot (type 35) for a very heavy tank slot (type 36) to ensure that the battle group gets Kingtigers after december 18. Substituted another heavy tank slot for a medium tank slot, since historically about one third of Peiper's tanks were PzKw IVH's. I also had to compensate for the added Kingtiger slot.
* KG Hansen:
Major changes. Removed all tank slots and all exotic haaftracks. Historically the entire SS-Pz. Reg. 1 was part of KG Peiper and no tanks were issued for KG Hansen. Peiper also got the only halftrack mounted battalion of Panzergrenadiers, plus the only halftrack mounted engineer company which contained ALL the halftracks equipped with flamethrowers, infantry guns and mortars. KG Hansen was instead issued the entire SS Pz.Jg. Abteilung 1 with its 20 JgPz IV/70 and 11 towed PaK 40/75mm AT guns. However there are numeros reports of PzKw IVH, PzKw VG and PzKw VIb (Kingtigers) with Hansen's battle group at later stages of the offensive. The reports of Panthers with KG Hansen are almost certainly wrong, since both Panther equipped Panzer Companies crossed the Ambleve river at Stavelot with KG Peiper and were used in the following fighting at La Gleize, Cheneux and Stoumont. It is a fact however that PzKw IVH's and Kingtigers historically did join forced with KG Hansen after december 18. Before the attack on Stavelot december 18 Peiper divided his forces into two groups: the 1st and 2nd companies (Panthers) plus the bulk of the Panzergrenadiers would assault Stavelot while a smaller group consisting of 6th and 7th companies (PzKw IVH) plus one engineer conmpany would probe the Salm River bridges at Trois Ponts. Later that day the PzKw IVH companies had to disengage reorganize because american engineers blew the Trois Ponts bridges and lack of fuel. This delay caused Peiper major problems. Only the 6th company and parts of KG Knittel managed to reinforce Peiper before the americans recaptured Stavelot and cut off Peiper's forces. The remnants of the 7th company (about 10-15 PzIvH's) and an unknown number of Kingtigers fought with KG Knittel, KG Hansen and KG Sandig (which is not represented in the game) in the following days of fighting at Stavelot and Trois Ponts to relieve KG Peiper. In spite of these facts I've chosen not to issue KG Hansen any tanks. The battle group would simply be too powerful if it contained both Jagdpanzers, Kingtigers and Pz IV's. There's is however a chance that KG Hansen will recieve a command tank, Panther or PzKw IVH, if all command Jagdpanzers are knocked out. The order of battle for this battle group is modified as follows:
1+2 Platoon: Commander, two heavy infantry, machine gun, At inf
Support Platoon: Command tank (JgPz), two medium tank destroyers (JgPz IV/70), medium AT gun, medium mortar
* KG Knittel:
Major changes performed! This battle group was very weak in the original Atomic version. As mentioned before this KG historically had only six armored cars, so I had to compensate for removing the rest of the armored cars from the 1 SS force pool. Stragglers from Peiper's panzer regiment did join forces with KG Knittel after december 18 as mentioned before, and I've tried to model this in the following way:
1 Platoon: Commander (ht), two armored cars (Pumas), two scouts
2 Platoon: Commander, two heavy infantry, machinegun, AT inf
Support platoon: Commander, very heavy tank (Kingtiger, type 36), medium tank (PzKw IVH, type 34), flamethower, medium mortar
The first Kingtigers will appear on december 18. Historically these were caught in the traffic jam in the back of Peiper's column and didn't reach the front line until december 18 and 19. In this mod the pool of Kingtigers will be divided between KG Peiper and KG Knittel. KG Knittel is now more infantry heavy, which should compensate for the loss of the armored cars. It is also an abstract representation of KG Sandig (not represented in the game!), which included the bulk of SS-Panzergrenadier Regiment 2. Historically Knittel had one company of combat engineers (truck mounted), which is why I've included a flamethrower unit in the support platoon.
B. Panzer Lehr Division:
* Force pool:
Removed most of the armored cars. The original Atomic force pool contained a number of Pumas (PSW 234/2) that exceeded the entire german war production several times!! Only a total of 101 were produced. I've added some recon halftracks instead.
* Battle group commander ranks:
- Major von Fallois
- Oberstleutnant von Poschinger
- Oberst von Hauser (correct name of KG 901 commander!)
* KG von Fallois:
The Panzer Lehr division follwed a different organizational pattern than 1 SS Panzer Division. The tanks were divided between all three battle groups. KG von Fallois was issued one company of PzKw IVH's and one company of JgPz IV/70, a total of about 25-30 Panzers. This wasn't represented in Atomic's original files. Therefore I've modified the order of battle as follows:
1 Platoon: Commander (ht), two armored cars, two scouts
2 Platoon: Commander, two heavy infantry, machinegun, AT inf
Support Platoon: Commander (ht), medium tank, medium tank destroyers (JgPz IV/70), medium AT gun, medium mortar
* KG von Poschinger:
Removed one tank slot and added one heavy tank destroyer slot. Historically the Jagdpanthers of schwere Panzerjager Abteilung 559 reinforced Poschingers battle group in the later stages of the offensive. The first Jagdpanther will appear on december 18.
* KG 901:
Removed all exotic halftracks! Added one infantry gun and one medium mortar.
C. 2 Panzer Division:
* Historical battle group designations:
Atomic has mixed up several battle groups from the 2nd and 116th Panzer Divisions!! KG Stephan, the recce BG, actually belonged to the 116th Panzer Division. The recce BG of the 2nd Panzer was actually KG von Bohm, which Atomic has designated as the armored battle group!! The armored battle group was called KG von Cochenhausen.
* Force pool:
Removed all armored cars. The armored car company of the recconnaissance battalion was not combat ready for Wach am Rhein and didn't took part in the fighting. The original Atomic force pool also conatained several hundred Pumas!! I've added some halftracks for use with the recce BG KG von Bohm.
* Battle group commander names and ranks:
- Major von Cochenhausen
- Oberst Gutmann? I haven't been able to verify this!
- Hauptmann von Bohm
* KG von Cochenhausen:
No changes.
* KG Gutmann:
Removed all exotic halftracks.
* KG von Bohm:
Removed the armored car slots. The 2nd Panzer Division followed the same organizational pattern as the Panzer Lehr, so this won't cripple the fighting potential of this BG seriously. The modified order of battle is:
1 platoon: Commander (ht), two halftracks, two scouts
2 platoon: Commander, two heavy infantry, machinegun, AT infantry
Support platoon: Commander (ht), medium tank, medium tank destroyer, medium AT gun, medium mortar.
D. 12 SS Panzer Division:
* Commander:
- Obersturmbannfuhrer Krause
The 12 SS didn't have any Kingtigers so they are removed from the force pool.
E. Fuhrer Begleit Brigade:
* Force pool:
Removed all StuG III's. According to Jentz the FBB Panzer Regiment consisted of a) the 2nd battalion of Panzer Regiment Grossdeutschland, with 7 PzKW IVH and 38 JgPz IV/70, in place of the missing 1st battalion, and b) the 2nd battalion, with 17 PzKw IVH and 5 JgPz IV/70. Added some command Jagdpanzers. Total strength: 24 PzKw IVH and 43 JgPz IV/70.
* Commander:
- Oberst Remer
I've removed one medium tank slot and added one medium tank destroyer slot. Most of the command tanks will be Jagdpanzers since they made up two thirds of the total armored strength of FBB.
F. 3 FJ Division:
* Commander:
- Generalmajor Wadehn
I have removed the Marders. This division didn't have any form of armored support.
G. 5 FJ Division:
* Commander:
- Generalmajor Heilmann
No force pool changes
H. Infantry battle groups
Corrected some of the division commanders' names and ranks. No changes to the force pools.
