Los Angeles-based startup Wevr has announced a new virtual reality content distribution platform called Transport. Currently in closed beta, Transport aims to unify different types of VR content and deliver them all within one self-contained storefront.
Transport isn't just for games and tech demos. Wevr's presence at Sundance this year garnered a lot of interest in virtual reality filmmaking, after screening a number of collaborative and experimental works such as Waves and Irrational Exuberance. UploadVR reports that part of what Transport aims to do is create a "VR file format" for different types of VR content.
The platform is also hardware agnostic, which means it currently supports the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Samsung Gear VR and Google Cardboard. Transport will be featured as an individual app within each system's own online store.
Wevr also announced that it has secured over $25 million in investment from companies including HTC and Samsung. No date has been set on an open beta or launch for Transport yet.
