FPS means "frames per second" (or First Person Shooter) and can be understood as "pictures per second". The FPS value indicates how many frames per second appear on your screen and how smooth the picture is. Often, the "frame rate" is mentioned. Humans can process about 16 to 18 frames per second. In video technology, a standard of 24 frames per second has prevailed, which guarantees that a video appears as a smooth moving picture. In modern movies partially a picture reproduction with 48 FPS is used. These are marketed under "higher frame rate". To play such videos, a corresponding technical equipment is needed, which is slowly spreading in cinemas. Especially with computer games, the FPS specification also plays a major role: It depends mainly on the hardware of your computer, whether you can gamble a game liquid or not. In the professional gaming field it is often crucial to achieve a high FPS number.
