This month in modding...

With Summer / Winter Vacation kicking in for the students (depending on which half of the hemisphere you live in) - a slew of mods were released this month thanks to their new found free time!

The highlight without a doubt in July has to be Insurgency. The mod was super-hyped and super-anticipated from the start, and having to wait 3 years before it was released certainly didn't help the situation. Twice this mod won a spot in the Mod of the Year Awards Most Anticipated category, and this year you would have to say it is a good chance for Mod of the Year. So how does it stack up? Well it seems there are two kinds of reactions, the first and most common is "OMFGAZ!! this mod is _AMAZING_", and the second is "feels slow, I don't like it". Our recommendation is that you give it a chance and find out which camp you fit in.

Insurgency

For those looking for a bit of fast-paced free gaming (on Mac, Linux or PC) we have to recommend OpenArena, a game built on the GPL'd Quake3Arena Engine. OpenArena v0.6 was a smash hit, and with OpenArena v0.7 out this month, it is time to give it another shot. All the old-skool classic maps from Q1 to Q3 have been remade, so get ready for some Q1 DM6 gibbing glory!

OpenArena

TONS more mods were released / patched this month so for the full list head to our downloads section, otherwise here is a quick roundup of some of the more notable for the lazy people. Point of Existence 2 the mod which makes BF2 great, released v1.7 with tons of fixes and new maps, All Stars v1.0final for C&C Generals ZH was released and is a great mod for C&C fans, as it contains the best units from every title in the series. For those that think Quake is dead, give TRAVAIL: A Quake Journey a shot, a mod which adds two new episodes to the adventure. FarCry fans can rejoice, as the awesome new mods First Contact: Planetfall and Project Far Cry both came out this month and have been very well received. Movie goers who enjoyed Transformers can now play the Transformers BF1942 mod and _BE_ Optimus Prime. Other mods out this month include Battlestar Galactica Colonial Wars v2 for Starwars Empire at War, CSS Sci FI v2 for Half-Life 2, Celestial Impact a standalone game, Dragonia for Civilization 3, Cantrell City for Mafia and finally Combat Revolution v3 for Company of Heroes.

It was a big month of modding, so if you have any holiday time left - get gaming and look out for our newsletter in August. Thanks for reading.
