Powerful new mod platform levels playing field for game developers and community; mod.io launching today

Leading independent mod platform gives creative control back to developers

--

Melbourne, Australia: May 15, 2018 - Today, DBolical, a leading network of game development communities including ModDB and IndieDB, announces the launch of mod.io, the first cross-platform mod API that gives developers a new tool to support modding in-game.

Designed to work behind the scenes, mod.io does the heavy lifting, enabling creators to make and share engaging new content.

"For too long there has been a lack of tools that help developers support creators in an agnostic manner, restricting modding to a small percentage of tech-savvy users. mod.io removes that barrier, enabling creation, curation and sharing, providing a way for developers to interact directly with their community," said CEO and co-creator Scott Reismanis.

Founded in 2002 and with 267 million mods downloaded to date, ModDB was one of the earliest and most active supporters of user-generated content in games, and believe mod.io is the next evolution in empowering developers to take control of the potential for growth and player retention.

"User-generated content is key to the longevity and creativity within games. Half-Life, ARMA, and Warcraft are proof that a single mod can spawn entire new genres and experiences," added Scott Reismanis.

Launching with mod.io are the titles 0 A.D, ECO, and Sinespace. Partnerships with these titles were sought to demonstrate mod.io's flexibility to tackle unique challenges not supported by existing solutions in the marketplace. "We are excited to work with foundation partners doing something different. In the case of 0 A.D, it is working with the open source community. In ECO, mods are purely server-side and Sinespace is a virtual world that treats mods as templates that are there to be built and modded themselves," said Scott Reismanis.

In the current climate, consumers are pushing back on loot crates, governments are scrutinizing their use, while demand for content is ever growing. mod.io focuses on cultivating new approaches to driving development and community goodwill.

"We believe mods are the solution to win back consumer trust, and deliver deeply personalised, amazing new gameplay experiences," said Scott Reismanis.

Developers and gamers can find out more at mod.io. A whitelabel solution for large studios that require an in-house product is available to discuss on request.
