here is the porting directly from the nintendo switch version, some content had to be made compatible with the 2007-2008 build of the PC, some content had to be made from scratch since the switch version use different way to integrate sprite graphic in the game. Tools i used (nintendo switch rom extractor + unreal engine extractor + sir ninja RotP port and the base game as a reference to create from scratch the missing xml files)

then you have 2 options:
option a) use only the files of this download for a version of puzzle quest 99% similar to the switch version, with a couple of crash fixes

option b) download also the "mysteries of the dreamlord" mini expansion, to try a revamped game (the game can be completed 100%, but it is best to use only 1 of the 5 professions that already got enhanced)

Patch127a - encounter (mod) [quick remove].zip

is the new alternative way to avoid encounters, if you find them boring... while this file is inside patches, monsters not tied to a quest will vanish very often...

if a monster spawn is linked to a quest, you need to complete that quest to make the monster vanish as often as the others.

yes: use base 2.5.1 files, and then add the "new unofficial mini-expansion" files.

the 2.0 saves should be compatible... but you miss the enhanced spellbook for the 5 new classes. (if you intend to play the 5 enhanced professions, it is best to create a new character from scratch)

a suggestion is to just create new characters for the 5 enhanced profession.

if you want to check all the new spellbooks you can get the "Veteran, Become 50" quest immediately at the start of the game, without taking the first red quest.

you become lvl 50, unlock the full spellbook, then you can try the new spell outside the single player campaign, in the fight an opponent/choose an opponent screen.

if you like one of the new profession, it would be better to create a new character from scratch and start from lvl 1, skipping the veteran quest. (veteran quest can be taken only as the first quest, and disappears once you take the first red quest.)

at the moment i am finishing balancing all the spells, out of 270 of the original game, only 27 still need some polish, other spells have been refined more than once.

as far as i could test, the fights should be tight and close, if you lose you may need to shop for items, or try to figure out which spell to carry and which color to keep away from the opponent.

the next days i will finish the wizard profession, and boost the smartness of more monsters... so far all monsters got a statistics pass, that helps them gather mana, but i still have to boost the spellcasting a.i. of many spells :D they use sometimes enhanced a.i., sometimes they fallback to unmodded a.i. because i still haven't written the code :D

there are xml files
take for example english
inside each "raw" zip files like
Patch110a - Challenge of the Warlords (raw)
there is an English folder with xml files within

translate those in chinese using the latin alphabeth, otherwise the 2007 engine crash

then create a new zip file with the same folder structure and the translated chinese files... call it:
Patch110c - Challenge of the Warlords (ch) if you do not use mods

or

Patch999z - Challenge of the Warlords (ch)
if you use mods

and the new text should appear

Hello, thank you for doing the port. It's my first time updating the game, and I'm not sure if I'm following the steps correctly.

I unzip everything from 2.5.6 zip file into the game folder SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Puzzle Quest

And I start the game by running the Puzzle Quest.exe file.

But what I get is the old DS interface (old style skulls etc.), not the new slick Nintendo Switch style interface.

However, I do see the that the top of screen now says "Revenge of the Plague Lord".

What am I missing? How do I get the new slick interface to be displayed instead of the old interface?

if you have the steam or 2007 boxed version of the game, make sure that inside the patches folder there is no .zip file

then extract the 178.52mb zip file, inside the game folder.
it has got some mp3 files, one .exe file, some guides and maps, and zip files with content taken from nintendo switch version

you now have a game 99.99% similar to the nintendo switch version, the graphic is the same of the 2007 pc version, except the starting menu and all the new content

(in theory it could be possible to make a graphic mod to turn even the 2007 things with the graphic of nintendo switch, but i opted to keep the original graphic where possible, spending time to make gameplay mods for the game.)

at the moment i am still modding items, monster stats, spells, professions... and quests... eventually in the future i may see if i can make a graphic ui mod to change all the graphic of the 2007 things to their cartoonish switch counterpart... at the moment you can see the switch graphic with the portrait of the new professions, like paladin, or the new monsters like thrarg and barbarian

when i made the addon, i was more worried about making the new professions, spells, and items, and quest usable... i kept the old files where possible, that is why the graphic for some things is the 2007 one.

after you have finished playing this game version, you may want to try how the gameplay changes with the mods (bundled in the dreamlord unofficial expansion which is still unfinished) at the moment only fighter, warlock, monk, bloodmage, elementalist got "revised".
at the end of february i plan to update my mod, with new stuff added in and changed.

...

anyway when i will get the time i plan to include in the 178mb version the "updated graphic" for everything that can be updated... but i will need months :D

-I did have all the .zip files in the patch folder as .zip files - so now I unzipped them into patch folder like you instructed

-then I unzipped the the 178.52mb file inside the game folder

also thank you for clarifying about the UI - I understand that your priority was to make the game work, and it will take some time to make a new mod for the UI; maybe start with the battle board first? coz that's where you look at most of the time while playing the game; the world map and new interfaces would be nice, but not as critical

Resolved. I forgot about the base game ;)

I have the Polish version 1.02. After upgrading to 2.5.1 most things are in English (not all).
Is there any way to keep Polish dialogs, tutorials, etc. after the upgrade?

the dialogue files are only in 5 languages.

you can take any file of the polish translation and force them over my files, so your game will return in polish... except the new content that needs to be translated in polish.

to learn which files are needed, open Patch110a - Challenge of the Warlords (raw), and check the English folder.

you then need to extract the zip file somewhere, delete everything except the english folder, rename the main folder to:

Patch110c - Challenge of the Warlords (pol)

then place your polish files, inside the english folder... you can also use notepad, open the xml files and translate them from english to polish

then create the zip file Patch110c - Challenge of the Warlords (pol).zip and place it inside the Patches folder of the game.

edit: for revenge of the plague lord and attack of the golem lord you will need to do the same thing, again !

and i suppose a polish translation does not exist for the expansions... so you need to make your own one !

please tell me if i did something wrong.
launched the game and been playing for a while and then i saw a new enemy spawn that was blocking my road (straw golem).
that enemy is pretty much unkillable because for some reason it has stats like its a late game mob, around 3.5x the amount of stats i have (70 hp vs 206hp)
pls help me the straw golem is blocking my road so i cant progress the game :(

there is a minimod that make those monster vanish if you move around in the map:

it is from mysteries of the dreamlord beta, place it under Patches folder as a .zip file

at the moment i am trying to fix this problem in my mod, the last expansion added strong golems to the game.

with "mysteries of the dreamlord" i revamped and enhanced 5 of the 13 classes, my current step while playing monk is to edit monsters keeping almost everything intact, and giving the ability to skip a fight while using a mount... even an unleveled mount.

the next step will be to enhance the leftover classes, while also putting a cap on spells, to avoid them raise any resistance above 20

this would help making those monsters easier to defeat... keep in mind that even using a powered up class (monk), nerfing one golem item (mana node), defeating the wood and straw golems was harder than usual.

i still haven't published anything new, but i am refining the monk spells, and i finally found a way to make monsters challenging but not too much... and very easy at the beginning of the game.

plus i will upload some basic bug fixes of the switch/xbox/pc files, i mean content very close to the unmodded game that needs a little correction

Yeah you managed to make it functionally the same, even if you had to adapt different code behind it all out of necessity.

I wonder if there's a way to create a global item that is always equipped and doesn't take up space to try and simulate the fact you don't take damage when making mistakes on the switch version.

i remember you asked this a year (or more) ago
i could benefit for that thing too, but there is no way.

i had to find a different solution: i created a new companion, an orc shaman, that lowers by 10% the highest enemy resistance (if enemy has at least a resistance at 10 or higher)

there is no way to change a game rule, without the source code... that is why i could not make this rule: a resistance works only if you have enough mana in the mana reserve...
so a 25% fire resist, works as a 8% fire resist if you have only 8 red mana in the mana reserve.

there is no way to apply such rule to the game, so i ended up with the new companion shaman ^^, i plan to make it available the next update... i am still finishing tweaking the monk spells (missing 2), fixing the monsters (i am on chapter 3), and i will have to translate the text of the new companion and insert it as a reward for a quest, ideally after getting the the halfelf undead hunter companion, since tutorial on companions is given at that time... but this shaman orc companion should be gived before the first monster with 10+ resist appears.

Hi there. Thank you so much for all the hard work! I haven't played this game in years and your mods have made it even better than nostalgia.
Unfortunately I've noticed consistent crashes when Giant ant or Giant wasp uses Swarm.
I have the game through steam, and have put on mods:
110a+b,111a+b,112a+b,123a+b,125a,126a,130a+b
I have just removed 123a+b thinking it may have something to do with them being possible mounts, but still crash on swarm.
Any ideas jumping to mind?

it does contain all patches, the current build i am working on...

revised monsters up to chapter 3
revised monk spells up to lvl 40
new shaman companion, got from a placeholder lvl 5 quest in bartonia
a few revised spells...

i think i found a problem, the swarm spell contained 1 new feature meant for the [new spell] mod, taking it out is 99,99% similar to the unmodded game, except easier to learn and giving back the mana spent in excess after casting it successfully.

if you want to try:

with this, swarm should no longer crash, spells would be easier to learn and casting a researched or mount spell would give back extra mana if the spell is not resisted.

place the zip file, found inside the .7z archive, in the patches folder if you want to try it
