This month in modding...

As the end of the year quickly closes in (what's 3 months!?) and the start of the 2007 Mod of the Year competition gets closer, the number of BIG-NAME mods released continues to climb (as they all announce their "coming soon" download date in '07). There is a lot to look forward too, but first let’s look back at the month of September and get you gamers playing some cracker mods, which are as good if not better than the game they were built for! Team Fortress 2 by Valve is one title many people have been wanting for years. For those that cannot wait any longer or are not happy with the cartoonish approach Valve has taken, you can rejoice, because a mod by the name of Fortress Forever was released which aims to recapture the fun and mayhem of the original (Team Fortress Classic) on the Source engine.

Fortress Forever Mod

Battlefield 2142 and Battlefield 2 fans should clear out their schedules and free up their download pipes because a horde of 1 gig+ mods is charging through the system with some available in September and even more in October. The first of which is a big-ass mod by the name of First Strike, a Mod DB 2006 Mod of the Year "Most Anticipated Mod" bronze winner (how’s that for a mouthful). First Strike brings Starwars space battles, droids, walkers and MUCH MUCH MUCH more to the 2142 universe for you to challenge on an intergalactic battlefield. The team has worked themselves into the ground for a long time and it shows - the mod is a masterpiece (not without its bugs but a hotfix is on the way) and one Starwars fans and gamers alike should not miss.

First Strike Mod

September certainly makes up for a quiet August as we have barely scratched the surface with many more great mods either releasing or patching themselves up this month. Here is a listing of some of the more notable. Airborne v0.1 was released to keep the BF2 fans occupied, C&C Retarded for Tiberian Wars was released for the crazy folk who want unbalanced crazy-powerful weapons at their disposal. Movie Battles for Starwars: Jedi Academy came out so Starwars nuts can relieve the movies classic battles and perhaps even change the outcome with some carefully honed fighting skills. Hidden Source a long-time HL2 favourite released beta 4b, and Starcraft Heroes for Starcraft Brood War unveiled 3 new campaigns in which you assume the role of a single character (not an army of units) and must carefully play through the game upgrading their weaponry and ability as you progress. Singleplayer fans still living the Half-Life 1 glory days be happy, because a new mod by the name of "Sweet Half-Life" was just released, and judging from the feedback it is a cracker and one you are dead-set bound to enjoy. Last but not least, if you feel all the characters in Oblivion are too pretty and young, give Djangos Unique Features mod a whirl which allows you to add aging, scars, acne, tattoos and more at the click of a button.

HP Computer is Personal Again

Finally here is a word from our sponsors: The HP Blackbird 002 has landed. Combining the superior performance of HP with Voodoo DNA, Blackbird is a revolution in computer gaming. The 19-patent chassis only hints at the incredible originality of the overall design. A removable side panel and enclosed tool kit allow for unparalleled modding capabilities. And a liquid-cooled interior and deliriously over-the-top games guarantee that Blackbird can not only take the heat, but dish it out, too.
