Hello everyone! For today's DevLog, we will present you the steps of character design of Jeremy from "Somber Home". As you all know, Jeremy is the main character in our game and, after this long journey, we've finally finished with his character design.

Character Design

Thumbnails

For Jeremy's design, we started by testing thumbnails of children, experimenting with various poses and formats, in order to demonstrate a feeling of joy, leading to the result of the four images below.

Sketches

As for the sketches, we started by duplicating the thumbnail most voted for by us and some of our colleagues, which ended up being the most liked.
With this pose, we started experimenting with different styles of clothing in order to find the ideal portrait. After several attempts with the character's style, we started recycling some of the most liked drawings, thus having an appealing and captivating look.

Gray-Scale Sketches

After choosing the sketch, we started by covering it in gray-scale to see which result would be most appealing to the character, then adding a layer of color on top.

Detailed Sketch

Once we had chosen the best character for the game, we began to add texture to the previous design, giving it a more realistic and attractive look for the player's vision while in the experience. Shadows and glows were added around the body and the plush in order to reproduce texture to the character's portrait.

Color Studies

About the detailed sketch finished above, we ended up replicating it multiple times and giving each of them a different color style, in order to experiment with which visual aspect would be the best to offer for the game, being tested the various palettes that compare with the asthetic background of the different corners of the game.

J Colour Studies

At the end of an evaluation of the five characters, this was the winner selected for best demonstrating the lifestyle we wanted to give Jeremy.

J Final Concept

We would like to inform you that the final result of the game will be revealed in a few weeks and that this long journey is about to come to an end.
Thank you for supporting us so far, and we'll see you next time!
