How to start Brutal Doom: - Windows: Without dragging and dropping. - Linux: Without much headache.

Posted by on - Basic Starting a mod

Brutal Doom's install on Windows is easy-peasy, just download ZDoom, GZDoom or Zandronum, copy the Doom WADS and the Brutal Doom pk3 on the source port's folder.

Start Brutal Doom without dragging and dropping the pk3 into the source port executable
Create a shortcut to the source port's executable, then right-click it and select "Properties", add to the shortcut's target "brutal19.pk3" and that's it!

In my case the shortcut's target is:
C:\Games\ZDoom\zdoom.exe brutal19.pk3 DoomMetalVol4.wad

That loads Brutal Doom and the Doom Metal Soundtrack (which you should download), in case you have multiple Doom WADS in your source port's directory, you'll be able to choose which one to load before starting the port.

Getting Brutal Doom to work on Linux
In my computer (Netbook) I'm also using Manjaro, and the game works fine at 640x480 (1024x600 also works, but explosions slow it down a lot), Though you should be able to build a source port from source (!!!), Manjaro makes it a bit easier.

First you need to install yaourt, then on a terminal type "yaourt zdoom" (or GZDoom or Zandronum) and it will make the package building and install.

Once the source port is installed, go to "~/.config/zdoom" (or gzdoom) and copy there your Doom WADS and the brutal doom pk3.

Finally on a terminal type:
zdoom brutal19.pk3
And it should start without problems.

You don't need to copy pk3 in the source port folder if you use Zandronum. You can just specify it in additional WADs when starting new server and press play offline

Welp, the shortcut can go **** itself. It literally doesn't work; when ever I try to follow your directory example, it comes up with an error message every single time. [sigh] Why is GZDoom such a bitch to get running? Why do I have to do a jig-saw puzzle every single time I want to get addons with Brutal Doom?

So how would someone with not a lot of knowledge install this? haha. I ended up torrenting a version of brutal doom already pre done, but it doesn't seem like it is actually working. Before I did that I ended up getting everything you said to get, so Zdoom Gzdoom and Zandorum, plus a bunch of packs, doom metal, brutal 19, brutal mutations ect.. So I have the WADS, and can mod the way you say... buuut can't quite figure it out. or better yet how do I just add these packs to an already existing file?... these are the noobiest questions, and are probably hard / near impossible to actually answer while not being able to physically see it, but I really wanna play brutal doom haha, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

hi guys, this tutorial doesnt make any sense to me. i dont know what 'the source port' folder is. i placed the wads and pk3 into the gzdoom folder because thats what i assumed, started up GZdoom, and it was just normal GZdoom.

Simply drag and drop "brutalv20.pk3" onto "gzdoom.exe" and it will load Brutal Doom as it launches GZDoom. If you want to load Brutal Doom and Doom Metal (the soundtracks), you need to right-click "gzdoom.exe", create shortcut, right-click the shortcut, hit properties, and then add this onto the end of the target: brutal19.pk3 DoomMetalVol4.wad. So click in the target field right after gzdoom.exe and hit space once, then just paste this in: brutal19.pk3 DoomMetalVol4.wad

Launch the shortcut and you should be good to go. You can also use the shortcut if you don't want to drag and drop the .pk3 onto gzdoom.exe every time you want to play it. If you don't have Doom Metal just leave that last bit off of the target.

obviously, since the filename of the latest version is brutalv20.pk3 and not brutal19.pk3, the shortcut target should be, for instance:

"C:\gzdoom\gzdoom.exe brutalv20.pk3 DoomMetalVol4.wad"

and not

"C:\gzdoom\gzdoom.exe brutal19.pk3 DoomMetalVol4.wad"

as listed in these instructions.

I love the mod, and I use the version 20 on GzDoom. But I can not kick, change the color of the crosshair, throw a grenade, pick up a barrel, aim with the iron sights and more, for some reason.

Those special abilities/options don't work, and I don't know why. Can somebody help me ?...

Also, none of my weapons have custom textures...

I had a hell of a time getting this to work, so I'll post my solution here.

Under the [IWADSearch.Directories] and [FileSearch.Directories] sections of the .ini configuration file, make sure that *every* directory that contains something you might want to include is in there. Remember, IT DOES NOT SEARCH THROUGH THE SUBDIRECTORIES.

If you have any file names or folder names that have a space in them, put quotes around it. "Brutal Doom.pk3", for example.

Also, if anyone wants to go poking around, it seems like the pk3 files are just renamed Zip files. So if you have an error code, you can actually unzip it, go into the text files, change a bit of the code, and recompress it (making sure to back up the original).

The file I am getting when I try to download Brutal Doom v21 is a .rar file, is there a way to get a .pk3, or what? When I try to drag brutalv21.rar onto gzdoom.exe it just opens regular GZDoom, no Brutal Doom stuff. Am I doing something wrong?

EDIT: Figured out that I needed WinRAR to extract the .rar to a .pk3. Easy fix, worked out great!
