A tutorial on how to properly test the Puzzlr Beta running build 0.7.42575.

Puzzlr Beta

Summary

The goal of this tutorial is to get feedback from users on what we have so far and to find and fix any bugs we have so far.

This build contains all of the following changes from the standard source engine :

  • New Materials (High-Resolution Players, Cube Skins, etc.)
  • New Models (Puzzlr Cube, Fully Animated Combines, etc.)
  • New Maps & Game Modes (Puzzles, Scoreboard, etc.)
  • Engine Modifications (New Commands, Modified Physics, etc.)

New Materials

The new materials include high resolution skins for the rebel male players, 12 or so skins for our Puzzlr cube, and various other textures to be used within the maps.

New Models

While there are few new models, the ones that are included are very important. We included the Puzzlr Cube as well as some new models for the Combines. The new models come complete with full animations for gaming.

New Maps & Game Modes

This build of the Beta comes complete with 7 maps (6 of which are considered complete) and 3 game modes. The 3 game modes included are Sandbox (SBX), Puzzle Map (PZL), and Scoreboard (SCR) and each have a fun and unique detail about them. Sandbox is the simplistic game mode, allowing you to have fun and hang out with your friends in a map. The maps contain cubes with various skins and you can have fun killing each other with said cubes. Puzzle Map is the main game mode for Puzzlr, allowing users to participate in fun and unique puzzles that challenge the mind or simply use your time, maps include Half-Life 2 style puzzles, mazes, and some new puzzle styles. Scoreboard is the new time-wasting competitive game mode complete with some new textures. The goal of Scoreboard is to play a competitive game against your friends in an attempt to earn points. The Scoreboard maps include a basketball-esque game and a wallball-esque game. Future builds will include new types of Scoreboard maps for various competitive games.

Engine Modifications

The modified Puzzlr engine comes complete with changes to make the gameplay more fun and exciting. These changes include new commands as well as physics changes. The new commands have a known bug in that they only operate inside of a game but the commands are "puzzlr", "credits", and "changelog" though more will be added in the future. The physics changes include a different gravity, new acceleration rates, and a movement roll. More changes will be made as time goes on and more are suggested.

Known Bugs

There are few known bugs but they are as follows :

  • New commands only work in-game, not from the menu.
  • Options menus have some issues with rendering things in the corner.
  • Noclip is temporarily broken.

If you find a bug that isn't listed here, please report it as soon as possible.

Thanks,
Aaron Weiss
Lead Programmer

*When you strafe left or right and spin your mouse, the screen starts to shake. It feels like lag and can get really annoying.

*Most of the time when I start the game, I experience problems. I need to Ctrl Alt Delete, Cancel and then tab up the game. It might aswell be my system. (Windows 7 32bit Home Premium). Do not take this to serious though, because I do have this problem with other mods, just not as much.

*If you push a cube against a wall you will walk through it. The problem with this is when the cube is surrounded by 4 walls (above, below, left and right) and you drop it, you'll be stuck in the cube. If you plan to release any maps with this kind of solution, I suggest you make the cube collide with player. (Found in Sbx_beta)

*There's a random Modern Warfare 2 picture that pops up when I start a map. It just looks odd.

The pzl_intro map. After the exit sign is there just a elevator down into a hole or is it supposed to be more? I figured there's another room below because of dropping down the cube, but I'm not sure.

* I'll see if I can reproduce this one...

* Definitely your system, sorry. It hasn't happened in any of the private tests at all.

* A fix for this will be implemented in the next build.

* That's the temporary loading screen and game menu image, it'll change soon.

And yes, at the end of that level you go down into the elevator and the level changes to the next one in the series. It wasn't implemented in that version but it should be ready in the next build.

no clip is temperately broken, the modern warfare background is a placeholder for the background i'm currently mapping, when you get stuck in the cube that happens in hl2 also, as for the shaking I will get chromatica to find out about that issue. after the elevator its supposed to change to the next map but i have not released the 2nd map due to it not being complete. thanks for all the time you spent telling us about these bugs :D

Server side-settings, you can change those but the defaults are there to make it seem more dramatic :3

Also, noclip is... disabled? i can't move when i activate it. You may say it's to stop cheating but tbh, for beta testing, you should be able to check whether something is broken or not.

pzl_game01 map crashes my game completely too :P.

pzl_game_01 was included on accident, it crashes for you guys because it's not done. Also, noclip isn't disabled, it's bugged. I'm not sure why, but I'm looking into it.

I got the noclip to work. I think you've got the "sv_maxspeed" to high, 600 is good. I was able to fix the noclip by the console, so all you have to do is just to edit the basic lines in the server config.

The default noclip speed is to high in my opinion, I would change that to "sv_noclipspeed 1".

sv_maxspeed 600
sv_noclipspeed 1

And for public users.

You can get the console by right-clicking Puzzlr in steam gamelist, then press properties, in there you click the "set launch options", and type in "-console" without the quotemarks.

I can actually change it without config files in the engine, that way we don't have to deal with unloaded config files and what not.

I was bored so I thought I'm finding the limits to sv_maxspeed (noclip)

sv_maxspeed "<2249": Any higher than 2249 will make noclip freeze when you're going in straight directions.

sv_maxspeed "<3181"(Going straight wont work at this number): Any higher than 3181 will make noclip freeze when you're going in strafing directions. (i.e, W + A and W + D).

So keep it somewhere below 2200 as 2249 is really slow.

Wobbier, I am just glad to help as I see this mod might end up awesome :D

Thanks so much man. You'll be in the credits in Beta2. And I promise I'll get to running a server for Beta2, that way everyone can play at once. For future record, I've got 5 mb/s upload, so even in Sweden you shouldn't lag much. :D

So, can you please explain the new Gravity and Acceleration Rates?

Also, what do the new commands do?
