Introduction
Harbinger by Silverback Entertainment runs notoriously poorly on modern OS's. It often results in multiple unintended graphical effects.
There are thankfully ways to fix these issues. Recently a new DgVoodoo update has fixed all of the issues I've noticed with the game. I'll explain how to fix these.
What you will need
- A copy of the game. You can acquire Harbinger legally from GamersGate.com currently.
- DgVoodoo2
Installing DgVoodoo2
To install DgVoodoo 2, first head to it's website and download it here. Make sure it's 2.82.1 or later as that was the version I was able to get working.
Next after you download it, extract dgvoodoo.conf and dgvoodoocpl.exe to your game folder.
Next, go to MS->x86 and copy all the files in that folder to your game directory.
You have installed Dgvoodoo2 successfully.
Configuring DgVoodoo2
If you run the game now it should work however there's a few other things we can do. Double click dgVoodooCpl.exe in your game directory.
Next go to DirectX and uncheck DgVoodoo watermark then press apply.
Now start the game up. You should see the game run properly.
Troubleshooting
Note this fix is imperfect. One tip I can recommend is running the Harbinger.exe file as administrator.
Another thing I would recommend doing is unblocking the .dll files. As depending on your security settings it can block them which can cause issues if you don't run the game as administrator.
Try unblocking all of the dlls included with Dgvoodoo2.
How to run the game in Windowed mode
As a bonus I'll go over this. A very easy way to run Harbinger in Windowed mode is to install DxWnd. Once you have Dgvoodoo2 all setup and running drag Harbinger's exe into DxWnd and run it. It should now run in a window.
