Who said you are forced to work with someone on the other side of the world? Its called, interacting with people in the real world. Then again, its hard to do if you are socially inept.
i don't use MSN or Skype for development mainly because of time zone differences
bit hard when you live in Australia and there's a massive time difference in America
Our very small mod team of 4-5 people communicates solely by E-Mail. We have tried everything from forums, instant messengers to team speak, but these methods of communication quickly deteriorated. E-Mail is the only way for us :)
Agreed with Trestkon, but overall, I'd say Forums. Although MSN is very handy, Forums allows me to tell my developers what to do without having to be online the same time they are.
I'm amazed so many use "chat" that shows their is significant improvements to be made in the game development space. Surely chat is not the most efficient means of ongoing communication. I mean while I love chat, designing game characters, evolving the storyline and all that I would feel is perfectly suited to editable wiki pages is it not!?
Hopefully we can roll out our trac system Trac.moddb.com for all to use and benefit from.
Chat works for my team because there's no deadlines, it's just a hobby and there's no rush to do anything, so there's no need to have constant communication.
Well there is one option missing: "all of the above" :D
Except for a wiki (which wouldn't tie in well into our current framework), we use all of those means. Forums for delayed communication, IRC chat for group sessions and most of the daily communication and problem solving. Windows Live often as well.
eMails are rather rate in our team, since the other means give us quicker response times :)
What about usual project management software? (OpenGoo, Collabtive etc.) :)
Exactly! We use our own proprietary project management software and a bit of a thing called "REAL WORLD INTERACTION". lol
it's hard to have "REAL WORLD INTERACTION" when somone live in USA and somother in France, Russia, do you think?

Forums!
Its especially handy for different time zones. I don't need to stay online till 2 AM to communicate to other members on my team. :D
A development wiki is up there as well. It centralized information and will save development time.
I choose forums, mainly because it's the first communication means we used. But at this point, we're using at least 3: e-mails, forums and Skype.

Steam chat hehe
Steam Here also.
yeah
a developer forum and steam group chat
xfire chat (easy to share downloads as well) and email
different for each team I work on, but usually some combination of forums and steam chat.
i like skype better than msn but it seems more people have msn than skype.... so thats what i use.
true that Skype is better in some ways.
Though, Skype is an awful kind of bloatware... eats every possible PC resource.
Forums, but i would prefer skype or something simmilar, combined with a Wiki.
We also use MSN alot.
msn i dont care what time zone it is if i need to talk with a team member i just stay awake till the member coms online!
Steam chat and forums.
Needed an "all of the above" option :)
Agreed, all of the above.
Wiki for plans and logs
Forum for group persistent discussions
Email for private persistent discussions
IRC for real-time discussions

All of them.
Skype!
actually i do it on teamspeak
I think use of some or all of these simultaneously is pretty common.
We use all, except voice chat tbh.
There should have been an "all of the above" and "other" option.
There are other resource management software out there.
Forums mainly, as well as chat programs occasionally.
Mainly use Xfire to manage the dev team..Also use our forums though.
Stupid Comment System
Ditto
Does this comment system ever work properly?
Forums, and teamspeak

I either meet up with my team or we chat on Skype, it's a handy tool to develop with.
smoke signals ;)
Where's the option for 'with a great big ******* hammer.'?
In all seriousness however, I generally make use of all the above.

Actually E-mail and messengers as well. Cause the ones who just help you in little things are communicating via mails the most.
The Warm Gunners use Basecamp
Basecamphq.com
Check it out... its perfect for small virtual teams.
I personally use Forums, chat, and emails...
I dont have a development team, i dont create mods
Then why are you answering a pole about managing a mod team? >.>
definately chat, the quickest and easiest to do.
