We Are Leaving ModDB

We will not say “do not weep”, for not all tears are an evil.

Dear fans and players,
we have received word from ModDB officials that Warner Bros has sent them a DMCA takedown request to remove Rise of Mordor from their databases. We are grateful to ModDB for giving us time to put our affairs in order before the page is taken down.

From what we know, this has to do with copyright infringement, as WarnerBrothers holds rights to making games related to both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movies. At the same time, we do not know the specific reason triggering their intervention, seeing as we are a modification for an existing game and a non commercial project. At the moment, the only thing we can do is comply with the request from Warner Brothers. We’ll keep you posted on YouTube and on our Discord on everything happening.

We have sent emails to the Intellectual Property team of Warner Brothers and we are currently waiting on some form of answer, as well as a way to continue uploading our work here. Our developers are still going strong and you will soon see some previews we're sure you will enjoy!

Let me be clear. The mod HAS NOT been taken down, just our ModDB page.

As such, you can still join our Discord and keep up to date with our YouTube channel, as well as downloading through our NexusMods page.

Kind regards,
the Rise of Mordor Team

They did this with MERP too. You guys arent making money off of it, its a fan project, I don't get why they would want to do this.

Simple: WB holds the license. They don't cater to people who want games like this but, from time to time, they put out a different Tolkien-based game.

When people have options, they aren't starved enough to just buy it cause "Middle-Earth!" And instead might prefer to stick with a mod that gives them what they want.

Ohhh man, why they are keep on doing this. First no warhammer mods, then this gta mod thats needed to go offline because of remastered and now rise of mordor. I hope you can still develop the mod and maybe come back to moddb.
What tiny business man sits out there and thinks, WOW now this mod for total war attila is a big threat for our business???
I wish you all the best and hope you can continue 👍

Absolute tragedy, such a shame that this is happening. I'm hoping that this isn't an indication of WB's intentions moving forward with the LotR property... it does not bode well. I've been following this project since 2015, was excited to see a final release on Attila.

Again, the mod hasn't been hit, only the moddb page. Thank you for the kind words!

So the request is to remove Rise of Mordor from Moddb databases, not shuting down the mod. That gives hope.

It's sad to hear that. The work you did was impressive. Good luck for future!
