The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

A Long-expected Party, The Fellowship of the Ring

Another year has nearly passed and with it fellow LotR-fans could see plenty of updates for mods if not even the release of new modding projects which take place in the world of Middle-earth. We all could see in screenshots and videos the eager work of many people who spent a lot of their freetime working at something with passion and love to details. And for some modding project we already got glimpses at the plans, visions and aspirations of what might come with the new year when the days are becoming longer again.

Now with the end of the year everyone of us gains again the opportunity to nominate their favourite mods for the 2020 Mod of the Year Awards. As I did the previous years I list here the seven LotR mods which made it into the final round of the top 100 mods, in reverse alphabetic order. Don't forget that you can also vote simply for all seven of them ;)

Mod of the Year Awards

Released mods

Silmarillion Total War

Silmarillion: Total War is a mod for the game Medieval II: Total War: Kingdoms. It is set in the First Age of the Sun and Moon, steeped in theological and philosophical themes, while retaining the epic scale that most are accustomed to when they think of Tolkien. Vote for it here.

Rise of Mordor

Total War: Rise of Mordor is a modding project for the game Total War: Attila. The mod is created by a collective of motivated individuals who share a passion for Tolkien’s inspiring franchise with the final goal of creating a custom "Lord of the Rings" campaign, set in the immense world of Middle Earth. Vote for it here.

Last Alliance Total War

Last Alliance: Total War is an overhaul mod for the game Total War: Shogun 2. This modding project bases on stories from Tolkien's books, concretely on the Wars of the Dúnedain and Elves against Sauron at the end of the Second Age. It is in huge parts still WIP but in a state of an avaiable alpha with a playable campaign. Vote for it here.

Edain Mod

Edain Mod for the game Battle for Middle-earth II: Rise of the Witch King lets you return to the classic gameplay of the first Battle for Middle-earth, reimagined with countless new heroes, units and abilities. Journey deeper into Tolkien's world than ever before, relive the movies through meticulously crafted visuals and forge your path to victory in epic strategic battles. Vote for it here.

Divide & Conquer

Divide and Conquer is a submod for the legendary Third Age - Total War, for the game Medieval II: Total War: Kingdoms. It contains many new factions, units, scripts, 2d artwork and more and has been an ongoing project for many years now. Vote for it here.

Since they appearantly are not monitoring moddb actively anymore and don't post screenshots or such, there is no image since I am also too lazy to search for some actual screenshots of it.

Age of the Ring

Age of the Ring brings new factions, new heroes, new maps, new spells, a brand-new campaign and an expanded War of the Ring to the game Battle for Middle-earth II: Rise of the Witch King. This year the developers brought you the new factions Dol Guldur and Woodland Realm, giving you the ability to delve deeper into Middle-earth than ever before. Vote for it here.

Upcoming mod

Kingdoms of Arda

Kingdoms of Arda is going to be a Singleplayer (& Multiplayer) total conversion of Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord which aims to bring the world of Tolkien into the game. This includes: characters, locations, weapons etc. from The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, Silmarillion and other works by Tolkien and media made for his universe. Vote for it here.
