This update is mainly about the coding efforts done by the team! Aph has finished the base of the beacon system that is to be in use and in fact there is a picture with unfinished artwork (it was just to test the feature) Unreal-command.com

Beacons are destination points designed to be visible on the map and to tie in with the compass on the lower left hand side. Also, text appears next to the compass clarifying what the beacon means. The commander gives players beacons like we'd issue a move command in any RTS game and they are the main way of him giving his orders to the troops. Additionally, the text next to the beacon can be overidden by the commander so that he can give specific orders if he wants.


On that picture you may notice a few things. An updated HUD! A working compasses and the health/shield bars, which can be disabled if you prefer numbers, or you could just disable the numbers instead if that's your preference.

Although the above looks cool, the most exiting stuff is actually being done by AlphaOne, our newest coder who has been working with the commander interface including camera movement, unit selection and command ordering. Unfortunately, the nature of the work means there won't be any nice eye-candy until near the completed commander HUD.

For the unit selection, AlphaOne has created what many of you would be familiar with in RTS games including selection rectangles, control-clicking to add/remove units to and from the selection and right-clicking to deselect completely. He's also added the beacon system so now a left-click on empty space produces a movement beacon at that location for the selected unit.

Hopefully, some of you may have realised that what AlphaOne has completed covers most of the actual mechanics of the commander interface. This means the completion of what is a substatial part of the mod is not very far away and I hope that gives you loyal fans a little more faith that this mod will be finished before you all become geriatric :)

Other news:

Wonderdrug has completed UVW mapping of the harvester model I showed you last news post and this means it's fully ready to go to our skinning department.
