What we want to do, is to keep it a free mode game, with the main character starting out as a low criminal.
From this point, you can do a lot of things. For example, petty crimes to build your reputation and cash to buy small business as a front. Start running your illegal activites from this front, while gaining the attention of the local gangs.
You could remain building up your own gang, or joining one of the few current local gangs on the quest to being a "Made" guy. Eventually gaining enough respect to become boss, or gaining favor and fear to whack the boss and be bumped.
This isnt going to be some bullshit run and gun kind of game. We want it to be a slow build, empire and business management thing.
We're thinking of the pro's and con's of having it turn based vs real time.
Other ideas we've come up with include, renting out an apt building across the street from a known distillery. Hijacking booze, raiding card games and gambling joints, establishing and appointing members to your crew.
The idea is to start from nothing to being the boss of all bosses. Arranging meeting with other families, controlling certain illegal niche's, holding a monopoly on business's, being able to set a "tax" on illegal activities, the ability to send out orders from the top without ever getting your hands dirty.Also you will be able to design how your main character will look, eventually designing your own families emblem and name. and keep your bloodlines going, this means getting a wife and 1 kid or more to make sure when your characters die it wont be game over and your kid will take the wheel and be the head of the family, you could also choose an Underboss to become the boss of the family but this will change the families name, emblem and your character, basicly meaning game over for your main character. If any of you have any ideas on how to improve this game we'd love to hear!
