Post news Report RSS Story Mode

Over the last year we have brainstormed a new gamemode for KoA - Story Mode. After much delay we have managed to put together an informational article for the public.

Posted by on

Basically, Story Mode will be linked missions and scenes allowing players to relive events from the novels (and some made by the team, like "The Rise of Sauron" which is about Sauron getting The One Ring and destroying Middle-Earth). Story Mode will not include a campaign map and isn't a sandbox in any sense. Instead it will rely on heavily scripted linear missions, objectives, cutscenes and dialogue, it will act closer to custom battles than the original Mount and Blade's campaigns. Player(s) will be on a team to complete specific goals that align to the chosen story.

Currently we have 23 stories ranging from The Last Alliance to Bullroarer (Orcs invading Eriador with Bandobras 'the bullroarer' Took) to The War of the Dwarves and Orcs. Each story will have a set of missions ranging from sieges, battles and possibly things like stealth. Story Mode allows the player to have experiences they normally wouldn't be able to have because of the sandbox nature of Mount and Blade. Play as Elendil duelling Sauron? Check. An Olog-Hai breaking down gates of Minas Tirith? Check. Properly executed and cinematic charges of Dol Amroth Knights, Rohirrim, and the Grey Company against Sauron's minions? Check. This is the main reasons of adding the Story Mode, it is great fun to forge your own story but equally so having the option to jump in and play established events in the lore.

The idea of unlocking units and characters has been discussed, once completing specific missions in Story Mode those characters or units will be available to play during a "free-play" of the story or in any multiplayer modes we have. For example, after completing The Battle of Pelennor Fields the player has access to Prince Imrahil. Prince Imrhail would then be an option to be player as in Bannerlord's captain mode, leading Swan Knights. We have also discussed creating a purchasing system to buy characters and units to play as in the different multiplayer modes we will have, though the specifics we have not determined.

Gameplay Concept

Spawning
Depending on the mission players will have 1 of 3 options to spawn:
Soldier
Similar to basic Warband multiplayer, the player can choose between preset classes and a varied amount of equipment for each. Has moderate stats, no control of any troops, and takes orders.
Captain
Based on the Bannerlord footage, Youtu.be , the player can choose to be a captain of a select amount of troops. The amount of troops would scale depending on what the level expects of the player.
Hero
The hero can act like a soldier or captain, depending on the level. They will have buffed stats and can only spawn once. Some heroes might be restricted in certain missions, until they are completed (Beorn in the battle of the five armies could be an example, as he is not part of the battle from the start).

Objective Types
There will be different ways to complete each level:
1. Capture a control point
2. Hold and defend a control point for a specific amount of time
3. Complete the mission within a specific amount of time
4. Kill specific opponents
5. Get to a certain control point*
6. Kill/route all enemy units
7. Destroy X equipment ie, siege equipment, gate, wall, etc
8. Keep certain character alive

Most of these objectives will be combined to get a more intense experience and gameplay. For missions you might have X amount of lives to complete the mission.

That is all this time, if you have any suggestions for Story Mode, any questions, or what you would like to see from KoA regarding unique gamemodes, please comment. Huge thanks to Nicrlaitheking, who has designed the majority of this gamemode!

I know this is unrelated to the article, but will you make the characters that appeared in the movies have faces that resemble the actors that portrayed them? Or will you go off the book's description, or maybe an artist's rendition?

Most characters will look like the actors that portrayed them. If we don't have an actor to base their looks off of, we will look to a book description.

Some great plans, the hype is so real! Got a question:
will these storyline quests be released at once in the first version?

The Last Alliance storyline is planned to be released with the first version yes :) There might be minor updates to it at a later point though. I think we decided to leave out the dwarves for now, as they would be from Moria and have new and unique armour. Not sure though. We have made some plans/ manuscripts for the cutscenes as well :)

Just as an extra information: The 23 planned storylines covers everything that happened between The Last Alliance (End of the Second Age) to the reign of Aragorn's Son Eldarion (Fourth Age). The events concerning The One Ring/ War of the Ring is split into two versions:
1. Fellowship of the Ring (Based on the films and includes characters from the films and not that many book-characters. And the battles are based on what you have seen and know; Elves at Helm's Deep, No gondorian fief units at Pelennor etc.)
2. War of the Ring (Based on the books and involves every characters you know from the lore. Even minor events like Théodred's Death is part of the story)

There is of course also storylines for 'The Hobbit', 'Fall of Arnor', 'Eorl The Young' and even 'The New Shadow'.
If you have any questions for any specific storylines, heroes or the game-mode itself, feel free to leave a comment.
Kind Regards

So are you guys planning on having a "story" in the sandbox? Where things are actually going on during the sandbox? I.e. fellowship is moving around, battle of Helm's Deep etc. So I guess scripted events? I know that the AI is gonna attack helm's deep all the time but assuming you'd be able to do it in Bannerlord, would you set up one "official" battle with all the heroes and armies that are supposed to be there? Or will that be exclusive to story mode?

"Story Mode will not include a campaign map and isn't a sandbox in any sense."
If you have ever played any custom battles, it is closer to that. Everything will be in scene, so many linear battles except heavily scripted and other things to do.

Not sure if my previous comment was sent because of a crash in my internet but he was talking about Will SANDBOX have scripted events not STORYMODE. So will the events of the books and movies take place in sandbox mode whether you interfere or not is what he/she is asking.

I see, my bad.

We have planned some optional dynamic story elements. Things will not be forced like the battle of Helm's Deep or the Siege of Minas Tirith, but there will be things like the Council of Elrond.
The planned system is complex, we will likely do some sort of information piece on it at some point.

Did the story mode completely replace the M & B campaign? or will they coexist together ?

They will coexist. This Story Mode is like an extra gamemode.

Good stuff. Just discovered this mod now, and I really love the idea of linear story driven missions. Especially for the world of LOTR. I find "making your own story" (which seems to be an excuse for many giant Triple-A Devs these days to do as little as possible, IMHO) is fun until it isn't... If one is serious about playing through an actual story (like myself), trying to come up with ideas for a decent plot, characters, objectives, etc 24/7 that actually works, just burns you out. Sometimes I prefer to kick back and experience a well developed story others made that gives the gameplay meaning.

Yeah we are planning to include cutscenes for all of the storylines to give a more movie kinda feeling to it. Hopefully the new mechanics and features in the Story-mode will make all the players interested enough to try it out as it will be quite different from the vanilla campaign of the mod.

Can't wait for the mod! Looks amazing! Could you tell me how customizable the story would be? I mean if you can create a character and have an impact on events from the set lore?

Sorry for the late response.
The story will have no customization. The purpose of Story Mode is to tell the story of the Lord of the Rings. To create your own story you can play the campaign, which we hope to make as dynamic as possible.
