Mix of different strategy games with attention on deep gameplay

For about a month I'm working on a prototype of RTS game, that I called by now "Sticks and Stones". It starts when first humans takes sticks and stones in their hands and begin they way for supremacy on the planet. And it will end with campaigns of Alexander the Great. So it almost covers same time period as first of Age of Empires.

In Sticks and Stones I want to fuse ideas from different strategies:

  1. Basic mechanics like in classic RTS's: Dune 2, C&C, Warcraft, Age of Empires.
  2. Making squads at some point of game (triggered by researched technologies). The closest example: Knights and Merchants.
  3. Partial indirect control (Majesty). Player not always has control on units (depends on research technologies)

I work on it alone and right in the beginning I want to drop the parts that I can't do - there will no be graphics and music in the game. I want to make emphasis on game mechanics instead. The game will be in 2d - want to make it as simple as possible.

For last month I've made prototype of the squad system and I want to work on this game for several months. Now I'm using Python and SDL2 library. And if in several months I'll get satisfactory results I'll migrate the project to C++.
