Post news Report RSS Solitude's Future

Where it is now. Where it's going. Where it can go.

Hello Solitude fans,

Well here we are, still no release. Why is that? Well I've gotten pretty busy in my life, moved onto other (dead end) projects. I've been messing around with Unity engine and procedural content. As much as I love current generation game development like procedural content, physically based rendering, high polygon count, and advanced shaders, there's just something so satisfying about modding the Quake engine. It is how I got into game development many, many years ago. Its nostalgic to me. However, somewhere along the way I lost that drive to develop. I don't know where it went. Currently, Solitude Reborn is collecting dust (figuratively) on my hard drive, with the development build only tested on the PSP emulator PPSSPP. I haven't tested the current build or even many previous builds on the actual PSP which is also collecting dust(literally) in my garage. However, some recent news has sparked my interest. I've told some of you that I would love to port Solitude Reborn to the PSVITA. However Solitude Reborn relies heavily on GL (hardware acceleration). And the only port of quake, VITAQuake, was software only. However Rinnegatamante, the developer, has recently and successfully given VITAQuake hardware acceleration!

What does this mean for Solitude Reborn? It means that in my limited free time I am going to ATTEMPT to port over the engine features of Solitude to the new VITAQuake engine. I unfortunately can't give an estimate on how long this will take if I can even succeed. I have to learn how vitaGL works and relearn pspGL (PSPGU?) or whatever it was, and try to find out how to port it. Its going to be more studying than programming for a while, but I'll see what I can come up with.

If I succeed here is what you can expect:

•Dual Analog Stick support, no more clunky single analog stick for FPS controls

•Better maps, with the much more advanced hardware, map restrictions are more forgiving

•(I may be wrong) Touch screen support for the menus (maybe in game too? we'll see.)

•Online Multiplayer (I might try to set up some dedicated servers and matchmaking, maybe even highscores)

A PSVITA port would be amazing. 3DS port too.
Will there still be a release for the PSP?

So the version you have has the same assets as Solitude Reborn, as we were given the old original Solitude dropbox. However the quakeC was made from scratch and engine code is built on darkquake instead of fitzquake/kurok.

A relieving arrival I must say. Glad to know Solitude has not ceased development.

3DS is also getting hardware rendering. MasterFeizz says it works, but he hasn't posted it anywhere, at least that i saw.

unfortunately, i wouldn't be of any use in that field, i don't own a 3DS however, once the game is released the source will be too and anyone can take a crack at it. I am currently having a really really really hard time porting over features. I've spent too much time away from C and the quake engine.

Well I'm glad that the project is not dead but I would really appreciate it if you launched a psp check for those who do not have a vita but if a psp I'm waiting for more news
