Hey guys, this is just a little update telling you our status with conscript, the engine, etc. Please read!

Posted by on

Hello everyone, I'd like to take a few minutes of your time to explain to you all the status of conscript, our engine, and development.

The split was a result of many months of coding in-activity, our main coder was wrapped up in a lot of his own projects and generally did not want to continue working on ours. This was his engine so he knew it best, and finding a replacement was not possible, we were tired of slow/no progress and our coder was tired of working on granite, so we decided to part ways and in the process leave the granite engine. After a talk with the team and some planning, the PC-focused build of Conscript is now using the source engine

Our team mates are taking it pretty well and adjusting to the changes, with most of them being source veterans from before.

After talking to one of the moderators over hear on moddb and he switched our game's engine to using the source engine.
We are in fact continuing the psp version, and even with the change in focus, we do intend to release

We might loose a few watchers from anyone who doesn't like the change, and we might even gain a few, but either way we are still going strong to provide you all with the best gaming experience we can.

We are looking for dedicated mappers and modelers, and texture artists, if you can lend a hand and willing to work, drop me a message.

Here's some cool artwork by jaam, to keep this update lively :)

Keep watching, we have the big update coming up for ya in a few days

...a mod? why a mod?
this is a very big let down! specially by the fact I dislike HL2, so I don't own it :/

Also, why do you throw away the quake engine? the retro graphics and all the things you achieved with it were incredible!
I can't understand the switch, from doing something that anyone can play, to a product limited to people who have HL2.

Very sad news to me...

So you dislike HL2, yet you have been tracking a game based directly off of it... ok.

Quake version = psp build, we are not dropping the quake build of our game. Also, we are keeping all our models/maps so we will continue having the "retro look" of the early hl2.

Yes, because your game looks more complete, fun, and more HL1-ish than HL2...

I am sorry to disappoint you midnightmare, you are a cool guy who only has shed compliments on our game and team since the start, but this change is for the best and we are still keeping the psp version. We were trying our best to achieve most of the source engine's features on our engine originally either way.

I do hope you stick with us, this is still conscript, no matter what engine/form it is, we are still doing our best to give you the best game we can.

I frankly also felt this game was heading in a better direction when it was stand alone. It offered the potential of a fully open-source version of the Source Engine, built specifically for PC/PSP homebrewing. Now that it's just another "Half-Life 2 mod trying to be like the beta" I have to admit I am sincerely less interested.

We didn't intentionally plan to change the engine, we were pretty cozy with the granite engine. After nano became unable to make any updates with it, we parted ways.
We are going to be the same conscript, same plan as before, just everything is going a bit smoother with the updated tools and resources.

Um... but it's not just the same thing. People will need to download Steam and TF2 -at least- to play the PC version. And does that mean the PSP verison is essentially going to retain all the remaining bugs in the Granite engine? Or are you trying to get Source onto the PSP? Lastly, did you guys consider just trying to find someone to replace nano?

I'm not trying to put everyone in the same boat, but I'd say quite a large group/most of our trackers do have steam and hl2 already, if not I am sorry, you will still be able to play the psp version none the less

The psp version has never used the granite engine, it is just using a modified quake engine named proquake, and we've been testing this with darkplaces on the PC.

We have scarT who has volunteered to help us with coding, and so far we're doing quite alright, I'm glad he offered a hand to us.

I didn't mean to sound sarcastic, I was dead serious about my opinion of your project ;) (my second comment about preferring it over hl2)

It's cool that you keep it on both sides, but to be honest i wasn't here for the pc version so i don't mind about source or not.

I am ok with this. It would be cool if this still was on it's own engine, but whatever is better for the team to work is fine with me.

Well, at least we get now a nice mod for the pc, idk why so much ppl are whining but source is a good engine for making own games, better than darkplaces xD

But plz dont let the psp port die, make at least a multiplayer mod with frikbots and the weaponmodels for psp :D

(Modified so I don't sound like an ***)

Not quite sure what to say about this other than "I told you so" really :S
Hopefully this will be the last engine switch... Though I'm curious as to why you guys didn't just go back to the Darkplaces engine, it doesn't compare to Source but I thought the whole point was for this to be a standalone title rather than a mod?

We also haven't seen anything of the PSP version which makes me wonder a little if you guys are even working on it anymore. From what I keep on being told you are and you've made a lot of progress on it but then that just begs the question of when are we going to see anything else of it? I'm not a huge fan of Quake-based games being developed for the PSP but if you guys are promising that then it's what a lot of people expect to see.

I'm also curious as to how easy the transition to Source will be from the previous engine. Hopefully it won't hamper your progress too much.

The main point of the game wasn't to be independent, although I would have preferred it, but most of our features planned are already in source so instead of going back further, we just went ahead.

To be honest, again the psp version hasn't been worked on lately, the psp has a good 7-8 of of enemies in-game, pretty much all of our weapons, etc. We have quite a lot done for it, and I will continue it- I have some cool stuff I haven't shown yet for it either. I'll try to get some more psp related media up soon.

The transition was really smooth, all of the weapon models/animations ported within a day or two, maps were just imported(have to be re-textured, but still), sounds were a breeze, etc.
You'll be seeing some in-game shots soon with our content.

And guys, no one go crazy with another flame war, just keep your cool here.

There is now a detailed explanation of why we switched engines, something I should have done when I first posted this update, I was in a rush to post, forgive me for this.
