My apologies for taking so long to upload this podcast. It's rather funny that I can come up with a plethora of things to talk about, and yet I freeze when I sit down in front of my microphone. I tried to be a bit more lively and entertaining this time though.
One Last Thing
I didn't talk about it in my podcast for time reasons, but I've been considering releasing a demo map for the resource system in the mod. The resources, zombies, director, and survivor AI all work, and together can make a very fun game. If that can be out there, getting playtested and providing feedback to help me refine my mod while I finish up base construction, that would be amazing.
Let me know what you think of that idea, whether it's awesome, or whether you think I'm stupid for considering it and should wait to release a public alpha version when all the features are put in.
Finally, I'd like to thank you all for listening and reading.
^_^
I know exactly what you mean when you say freeze up. right before I start my podcast it's like soooo many things could go wrong, but normally it goes well, and you think of things on the fly.
Good job mate, sry i haven't kept up with mapping... :P
sounds like an interesting project. Dont worry about monotone comments mad just get out the development and make the next. I think the idea of base building is something that is always lost. I would like to see a game where you have to find pieces to build a fort...such as food storage containers or traps.
What you described is essentially what I'm going to do- you collect scrap metal to build different buildings of your camp: storage for the resources, workshops, traps, gates, barriers, etc.
What did you mean by "base building is something that is always lost"?
Do only grenades work for setting off noises away from the player? Or can we pick up objects and throw them, and hopefully make enough noise with them?
Since it's based on the multiplayer deathmatch engine, you can't pick up props (it's a network issue, it takes a lot of overhead for the system to update a prop like that while it's being held). I can go back in and edit it in, like Synergy did, but I don't think it's the way to go.
I think the standard half-life prop throwing mechanic isn't strong enough to be useful right now, as the things you can throw far wouldn't make a lot of noise. I like the idea of throiwng a rock, but I don't think a zombie would be interested that small of a noise- it wants a lot of movement and a nice meaty smell. Perhaps firecrackers with a delay? Still thinking as you can see XD
Maybe, but in many other games, zombies are attracted by large enough noises that generally don't have a meaty smell. I understand they are your zombies, therefore you can make them do whatever you want them to do, and act however you want them to.
