We have posted our first .plan here, via GarageGames. The .plan today covers the work being put into the design document, as well as possible engine choices.
This is my first design document, for what is to be ultimately a 30 minute to 1 hour long playable demo. Once I begin filling in the information in the design document, I can't imagine how many pages I'll have. It's a lot of work, but putting down my many thoughts onto paper (albeit virtual) really helps to organize what is solely an idea, into something feasible.
The Trythian Black Legion is a force to be feared, and Trythia's last hope at regaining its lost lands. Brutal, savage, and efficient, the Black Legionnaires are protected by powerful magics and trained from birth to be deadly warriors. They are not unstoppable, however, but possess enough strength to endure even the worst of injuries.
This is the General's mount, a Volprim. It is a noble creature used for centuries by rich and famous Trythians.
As always, we appreciate any and all feedback we get, whether on our profile (Tales of Fyrndell), our Forums, or website. Thank you for your interest--it's immensely appreciated, and we can't wait to reward you with Tales of Fyrndell!
@DanMattia: Uhhh.....Yes. You did make us look at this by posting it on the main page. Kind of hard for me to avoid looking at it if its blocking all the other projects I would like to see more :S
Not to mention that the bubble gum dragon looks like it has been ran over.. Although i have to say that the wings are pretty good... It just takes time man.. Microsoft Paint doesnt cut it
Yeah, I find it amusing that people like Tweak are freaking out, or even that Dan is trying to defend the drawings.
Dudes, we're not asking for rembrant.
But a decent understanding of anatomy? Well....it reaaaally helps if your concept artist knows the proper proportions of the human body.
For example. The guy with the sword currently has anatomic proportions more suiting to an arachnid. His face is deformed, his eyes are blue walnuts. I could go on.
I'm not going to rag on it, because obviously this guy is just inexperienced, and hopefully with some time and experience he will figure this out on his own. But with your intent on being a "professional studio" and whatnot "Overdrive games" you will definitely want to take on an artist of considerably more talent , and experience or you will not be taken seriously by anyone.
The concept art isn't meant to be pretty or hanging on the walls of a museum. It's so we can see the technicalities of the character and apply it in a modeling application to create a high quality 3d render. Bryan does a superb job at concepting and is learning more as he goes along.
We're in talks with someone who'll be doing concepts with oil paints and other more expensive mediums. But you don't make concept art of a soldier in oil paint--that's more for promotional needs.
There should really be a filter for this kind of stuff.
Its terrible. The first picture is a generic knight, while the second looks like the creature from Neverending Story, on fire. I commend you guys for putting forth the effort to make a mod, but please keep it to yourself until you have something decent to show for it. You'll save yourselves a lot of negative feedback.
You er....ah....aww ****.
How should I put this with out sounding like a ****
: Hire a concept artist who isn't using still using crayolas.
yah it sucks either shoot him/ pay his way through art school. sorry :/
You punks seriously need to grow the hell up. Who do you people think you freakin' are? I see more negativity from you worthlless pieces of **** in the source community than all other places combined. Get off your high-horses.
Keep your head up Bryan, you'll keep on improving. =)
Maybe it is you who should grow-up, calling people "worthlless pieces of ****" isn't exactly mature.
Well the concept art isn't the best I have seen, it gets the point across as concept art should, so good-job.
Calling spades, spades, has nothing to do with maturity. I also don't feel bad for what I've said, it's true and I'm not alone in my feelings. There is something really wrong with you people and taking a good look in the mirror might help. Your hate and judgement on everyone is nothing new and it's basically played out.
Well, i hope you don't model them based off those drawing, or else you'll have some very blocky and out of proportion characters :S
Kadish put it plain and simple.. This drawing looks like something I constructed back in 1st grade.. I mean, the freakin head looks like the shape of a Manga Character... Look man, you need to find yourself an experienced, mature artist rather than just an artist who is still learning as he progresses... No one will take you or any of your mods/games seriously after looking at this.. I am sorry, but I am going to tell you the truth.. This is grade school artwork...
: His eyes and face are meant to be like that. The Black Legion aren't quite human.
: Same comment goes for you. And the "Volprim" is not a dragon, and it doesn't say that anywhere. You need to look outside the box and think that some developers can, to be unique, create their own creatures and characters that differ from what the fantasy literature you're so accustomed to reading and watching dictates.
Im sorry, I have to agree with the other guys.
Im not much of an artist or anything but I knocked this up in 20 mins... plus 2 mins in photoshop to increase the contrast.
Trithian Black dude
My proportions are still out a bit but hey...
: That's too bad; we're going to continue posting this "terrible stuff." Did I physically force you to look at this? No. So don't complain about it being there.
And all feedback is good feedback.
Yes, actually, I was forced to look at this since it is on the front page of a site I visit often. A site that normally has quality standards. I'm not trying to dissuade you from continuing a mod, just consider what others will think of your images before posting it to a popular site. We're a little spoiled by high-quality work if you can't tell.
I hope, for your sake, these won't be included in the dossier you show to the Project Offset development team in an attempt to license their engine.
sinoth....what mod do u work on?
Oh yah MS paint definetly dont cut it.
Gimp.org
Yes, it's also a site dedicated to ALL mods, not just the high-quality ones. At least they are trying.
yea tbh its not that bad... but definetly not for public media... just keep this stuff within the team.. and use it as concept art nothin else :O... ur artist is 14 ? i think.. so it aint too bad just keep working on it :)
but yea you really should only keep this stuff within the team then u will be cool :)
They probably worked their ***** off to make those concept pieces. They probably worked their ***** off to make the plan and the storyline. While I agree this post may have been more suited to the mod profile news instead of the front page, these guys have probably worked just as hard as the next mod, and probably did it with a way smaller team than other mods. They deserve just as much credit.
cumon guys yer it aint that good but dont bash his first post...
gl with you mod dude.
Better than anything I can do. ^^
Keep it up, by time you will be supreme.
All you have to do is have patience and belive in what you are doing.
Also people, telling someone that "his work sucks" isn't going to help him improve, is it? If people would have told me that all of my art sucks, I would have quit modeling a long time ago.
Constructive criticism is the key.
Thank you to all those who have posted constructive criticism and suggestions for improvement. We appreciate all your support and will continue posting news for all of you to see.
