What is Painslayer?

Painslayer is a weapon and gameplay mod for the GZDoom engine that aims to demake weapons from Painkiller and Painkiller: Battle out of Hell with lovingly hand-painted sprites, while recreating the mechanics from the original games as close as possible.

Where to download Painslayer and follow its development

Keeping files in multiple places in impractical for me, so you can get Painslayer on my Github: Github.com Choose a release you like, scroll down to Assets and download the .pk3 file of your choosing.

You can also download the current development build to get access to the newest features.

You can follow the mod's development on my Twitter page: Twitter.com

Painslayer features

  • Weapons from Painkiller and Painkiller: Battle out of Hell:
    • Pain/Killer
    • Shotgun/Freezer
    • Stakegun/Grenade Launcher
    • Rocket Launcher/Minigun
    • Electro/Driver
    • Rifle/Flamethrower
    • Boltgun/Heater
      • Each weapon has a primary, and alternative and a combo attack (with the excpetion of the Chaingun that doesn't feature a combo attack).
  • Black Tarot Cards. At map start or at a button press (configurable) you can open the Black Tarot Board where you can buy Black Tarot Cards. Silver cards provide you constant passive buffs, while Golden cards can be activated once per level for a limited-time boost. The cards are based on the cards from the original game and can be acquired for gold.
  • Gold. Gold is used to buy Black Tarot Cards and can be obtained by killing enemies with excessive damage, found on the map and inside secret areas.
  • Souls and Demon Mode. When killed, enemies will drop souls, which are your primary way to heal in Painslayer. Upon collecting 66 souls you will turn into a Demon, gaining complete invincibility and a unique devastating attack for a limited time. (Demon mode can be disabled from Mod Settings if you wish.)
  • Powerups that are designed to be a middle ground between Doom and Painkiller. They include Weapon Modifier (temporary "tome of power"), Pentagram (invincibility), Chest of Souls (regeneration + increased soul count) and others.
  • Painkiller movement physics. This is an optional feature (off by default) that changes movement physics from Doom to Painkiller style. This affects jumping, acceleration, momentum and friction.
  • An in-game Codex. In development at the moment of writing this; once it's complete, it'll contain detailed descriptions of the weapons, items and mechanics.

Compatibility

Painslayer is compatible with Beautiful Doom: all you need to do run both mod files together, then while in-game navigate to Options > Beautiful Doom Settings > Beautiful Doom Weapons — set to Disabled. See Painslayer + Beautiful Doom + Eviternity video below for an example.

Painslayer doesn't replace monsters and is compatible with custom monster packs.

What Painslayer isn't

Painslayer is not and was never going to be a recreation of the original game. It's a gameplay mod that is meant to be playable om Doom maps against Doom monsters (including custom maps and custom monsters). It's also designed to look similar to Doom—a "demake" of sorts.

As such Painslayer does not and will not include the following things:

  • Custom monsters
  • Custom levels
  • 3D models for on-screen weapons
  • High-resolution textures/graphics

If you're interested in a mod that aims to recreate Painkiller more closely, I suggest checking out Painkiller: Mutilator.

Woah! This looks awesome, and seem like it plays so naturally. Love that you made the alternative fire-modes too. Big ups!
