Post news Report RSS Ostheer Update 7: Modernisation!!

Time for the next sneaky peaky!!! This time we'll talk about Ostheer Modernisation concept... I bet you didn't expect it :).

Posted by on

I guess you wonder what we would post if most of the Ostheer is already known. You couldn't be more wrong ;).

Modernisation?? What's that? April's fools again? How it works? Had to do with veterancy?

Modernisation is an Ostheer ability that let them use better equipment on the battlefield, reflecting the change of weapons, units and strategies used in the Eastern Front campaign while it lasted.

We can ilustrate how it works:

Your landser squad starts with their 5 K98s and if purchase the upgrade, the squad leader will use a MP40. After modernisation, squad leaders will swap his MP40 for a new MP44. The Marksman will use a MKb.42 Scoped semi-auto, but after modernisation he will use the scoped MP44. Some unit types will extend the bonus to existant units, others will affect only the units created after the upgrade is done.

Of course, this doesn't affect only infantry, but support weapons and tanks as well. There are three modernisation upgrades, for three groups of units (Tanks, Infantry, Support Weapons) all of them availabe on the HQ; each one has different cost so, it's up to you to decide what group you prefer to upgrade.

Each upgrade will be available to purchase so you can purchase them whenever you want, if you have the resources; the purchased upgrade or upgrades will remain until the game ends and you won't be able to recruit "outdated" equipment. The list of changes by buildings are:

Infanterie Gruppen Post:

Modernisation Cost - 330MP, 45FU

Landser Squad leader: MP40 -> StG44

MG Team: MG34 -> MG34/41 (Gains more or less the same stats as Wehr MG42)

Marksman: MKb.42 Scoped semi-auto -> StG Scoped full auto

AT Team: PzB 39 (Panzerbüchse Zug) -> Panzershreck (Ofenrohr Zug)

Kübelwagen: 985cc Engine -> 1.131cc Engine (Increase speed. Free with modernisation. Upgrades vehicles in field)

Schutzen War Camp:

Modernisation Cost - 450MP, 80FU

FlaK-38: PzII Luchs unlocked (Replaces towed Flak-38)

Panzerfusiliers: MP40 -> StG44

Panzerwerfer: Research becomes available upon modernisation completion.

Stormpioniers: Regular mines -> S-Mines(AP)/Teller Mines(AT)

Troop Halftrack: 2x MG34's -> Optional FlaK-38 (Sdkfz 251/17) upgrade for better AI (45 muni)

PaK36: Pak40 unlocked

LeIG18: 'Hollow-Charge Shell' ability unlocked. Grants LeIG18 greater AT abilities (30muni, 90 cooldown)

Panzer Kampf Kommand

Modernisation Cost - 520MP, 120FU

Panzer III: Gains additional armour on hull front and gun mantlet (Free with modernisation. Upgrades tanks in field)

StuG III: Improvised Armour upgrade -> Armoured Skirts upgrade (25 muni)

Panther Ausf.G: Available upon modernisation completion.

Marder II: 'Tungsten Core Shell' ability unlocked. Significant damage to Tanks. (40 muni, 90 cooldown)

Brummbar: Available upon modernisation completion.

As you surely have noticed, the towed flak 38 was changed from T1 to T2, and a kubelwagen now replaces it. It's better now, due to the flak 38 is too strong to be in that building and nerfing to oblivion wouldn't be the solution.

Modernisation is a different concept than veterancy... but that's another story and will be discussed in the future ;). See you next time.

Meanwhile from the front...

The IS3 really shouldn't be added, it didn't see action in ww2.

the IS3 is said to have been used against the japs, but some people think small amounts of them made it into the war with germany (though i doubt it). i would be intrested to see who would win in a fight the IS3 or the maus

The problem is the germans wont have anything to take out an is3. is3 could easily kill any german tanks.

Stop thinking in real life terms, the IS3 can still be taken out, it's just a buffed IS2, one time call in.

Stop commentating if you don't know anything about IS series and KT...
KT Armor is THICK as hell,also sloped.IS-2 122mm guy had heavy job to penetrate Koenigstiger's front armor.IS-3 have THE SAME GUN as IS-2 do.Maybe armor is thicker than IS-2,but 88mm KwK 43 can easily penetrate it's armor

Haha no they won't <3 The 122mm (I know, i know, in real life) could only penetrate the frontal armour of the King Tiger at 300m (from sources I found). Now how far the King Tiger needs be to penetrate that of the IS-3 I don't know, although I know that it could pierce that of the IS-2 at 1.1km. Still the IS-3 has frontal armour thick as hell.

Interesting. I don't really see much point in the Infantry one as it stands now, i'd skip to the Schutzen one as fast as i can, to take advantage of the PzII Luchs, 251/17, Panzerwerfer, and Pak40.

Hopefully after a bit of play testing, the Infantry one will get beefed up a bit to make it more apealing.

The costs may change to make it more appealing. However, the Ofenrohrs and Full-Auto Marksman are tasty units.

the problem seems to be that the landseer only gets a stg44 for their squad leader, and that you also need to get the mp40 uppgrade first, it doesn't seem very useful. Perhaps issue like g43s to other squad members no matter the mp40 uppgrade

Landsers are basic infantry, cheap, disposable. We can look into giving them more abilities with modernisation, but totally discarding Kar98's in favour of other weapons wouldn't feel or look right. The Squad Leader also gives the Landsers some buffs if I'm not mistaken, so it's a valuable upgrade.

i trust your own imagination, but I have to point out my suggestion was to issue a small number of the squad G43s, like PE grens only have a few (but scoped)

"The IS-3 came too late to see action in World War II. Though some older sources claim that the tank saw action at the end of the war in Europe, there are no official reports to confirm this. It is now generally accepted that the tank saw no action against the Germans, although one regiment may have been deployed against the Japanese in Manchuria". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Is3#IS-3

On that basis there should be a MAUS tank for the germans.

On that basis, we should also add in a TOG2, Tortoise and T-28 Tank Destroyer. IS3 lead a long and healthy life with over 2000 being constructed after the war, whereas Maus was proven to be a failure and had no impact whatsoever.

if you add IS3 you should add maus to even it out the maus didnt reach its full potential because there weren't enough built.if the IS3 is made realistic the jagd and king won't stand a chance-the panther already gets annihilated by the ISU152. giving the soviets a IS3 will make their armor even more overpowered. otherwise i think modernization is a great concept.

@FO3rocks
Nope. Maus is in a completely different league than IS-3. Why we should bother to add it? Only two prototypes were built and was a unit destined to fail unlike IS-3 that was the precedent of many modern tanks, besides arguablty saw action in WW2 was built in numbers and it deserved a place on the soviet army.

"If the IS-3 is made realistic"... and why would we do that? Panthers should loose against a ISU-152 in 1vs1 (not discussing about micro here) because is a last tier doctrinal unit.

No matter how many times we write it, it always pass unnoticed an people ask for the "Maus" as it were going to fix everything.

I'll quote BurroDiablo from above:
"Stop thinking in real life terms, the IS3 can still be taken out, it's just a buffed IS2, one time call in."

To be truth, IS 3 is incredibly powerful but incredibly resources hungry, I never actually build one when playing difficulty above easy and multiplayer, I prefer standard t-34 tanks which ditch more damage and more numerous than relying on getting 1 IS 3, which always never had a chance due to desperate need to replace staggering losses, you wouldn't know until you play hard difficulty or against an expert player.

I agree about the maus but the IS3 never saw action till the early 50's but who cares its not real life.
And also the tiger and panther paved the way and design for all modern tanks but the T34 gave the germans the idea of sloped armor..
