Just as Apple is hiring for virtual reality development, so too is Google. As reported by Road To VR, a number of positions have appeared advertising roles related to the design and manufacture of consumer VR hardware.

The positions include Hardware Engineering Technical Lead Manager; Engineering Project Specialist; Electrical Hardware Engineer, and PCB Layout Engineer. All of these positions make reference to familiarity with the manufacturing of consumer electronic products being a requirement, distinguishing what's next as a standalone piece of VR hardware, unlike Google Cardboard.

This comes shortly after Google appointed Clay Bavor VP of Virtual Reality, zeroing his focus in on the company's secretive VR developments. Though investments in Magic Leap and augmented reality tablets are public knowledge, such efforts speak to interaction design rather than the production of new VR hardware that these job listings now suggest.

If both Google and Apple enter the consumer VR market, not only will they be competing with each other once again in a new medium, but the likes of Oculus and HTC will have to find new ways to position the Rift and Vive against whatever headsets the tech giants are building.
