When I first created sketches for the various maps of 99 Bolts, I had intended for there to be only one wasteland map, and I didn't have any kind of miniature Fallout theme. I was interested in creating an artistic scenario where the player could simply walk up to the barren walls of a combine city and stand there, a trail of bodies in his wake. I wanted to include antlion battles, waves of fast zombies, and rebel outposts. But a funny thing happened in the middle of development: I bought Fallout 3 for the PC.
There were several things I was disappointed with when it came to Fallout 3. The AI was poor, the repetitions were blatent and annoying, and the story didn't change no matter how evil or good I became. But I was engrossed by the huge scope of the wasteland. Nothing impressed me more than stepping out of Vault 101 and seeing the radioactive wasteland stretching into the distance. Or watching a nuclear blast in real time from all the way across the realm. Or sniping somebody from the top of a satellite dish ... who's standing a good mile away.
I instantly knew that I wanted to emulate that scope and awesomeness in my map.
I started making changes to my map, which had already been littered with displacements and some gameplay functions. I had been designing with a totally Half-Life story in my head. But now I had something to fuse that with. I began scanning through the props, reshaping some of my brushwork, replacing my concrete bunkers with blasted residential structures, scattering piles of rubble around.
Interest in the map ramped up dramatically after this, and now I will be creating at least two more maps set in the wasteland. One of them will take place before the map I am showing off right now (meaning that eventually, the map I'm showing off now will be changing to supplement it), and a map halfway through the game where the player will have to leave the city and return for some reason.
I am looking for some people who LOVE Fallout 3 and have some cool ideas for a wasteland mechanic. If there's something you want to see in a wasteland map, let me know what it is!! I would be happy to include your suggestion and credit you for your creativity. Of course, I have a few ideas of my own that should make some of you hardcore Fallout fans happy, but remember: this mod will be a mix of Fallout's wasteland and Half-Life's universe. I intend to use Half-Life as a base, and Fallout as supplement.
So enjoy that knowledge, and please come back on July 15th for the official monthly update. Thank you for your interest.
