After some thought, and some recent occurances, our allegiance has swayed back to the Half-Life engine as the platform of choice for Daedalus. After seeing what mods like Natural Selection can achieve with the Half-Life engine and with two newly arrived map designers, we will be staying with the Half-Life engine. Since the mod will be single player, and with the player mostly exploring small internal environments, the mappers will be able to let-it-fly in terms of r_speeds and detailing.
I'm in the process of developing Jabs AI-12(P) Energy Weapon idea off the old drum feed rifle concept in the image gallery. The weapon will sport a cylindrical ammo tube comprising a superconductive energy loop which allows energy to circle inside the tube and be released on demand when the trigger is pulled.
The superconductive enery loop is held inside the ammo tube by a shock protective gyroscopic framework, which prevents sudden vibrations destroying the superconductive properties of the ceramics. While the ceramic core displays superconductive properties at room temperature a liquid nitrogen coolant system is required to protect the core from heating caused by gun operation and general environmental influences.
The ammo tube can be recharged, however in mobile combat the weapon exhausts and replenishes ammunition like any other. Due to the complexity of the cartridge, replacements are extremely expensive and very hard to come by.
In basic principle the weapon is a cathode ray tube minus the cathode, on steriods. An electron beam is produced and focused by magnetic lenses before it leaves the muzzle. A large voltage is produced by a series of transformers, allowing the muzzle velocity to approach the speed of light.
The weapon does have a recoil, since electrons are particles with mass and hence exert a force back on the weapon as they leave it. Atmosphere does reduce the effectiveness of the weapon, with maximum efficiency occuring in the vacuum of space.
The weapon will cause mechanical failure in some vehicles and mechanised infantry, and kill biological targets through heart failure, boiling of the blood, severe burns etc.
