Post news Report RSS Dystopia: April 2010 Update - Effects, Effects, Effects

This month's update concentrates on effects that we have created for our next version. A new Stealth, Green Ice and Tesla effects are all included in this month's tease. We hope to be releasing to supporters soon!

Historically, a lack of updates from the Dystopia team either means there is a lack of tangible progress or that we are sitting on something waiting to show it. Thankfully, for the April 2010 update, the latter is the case. The programmers have been hard at work making some great effects and squashing bugs that would otherwise plague our eventual release to supporters.

If you're a fan of Dystopia on Facebook, you'll see that we gave everyone a sneak peek of a new effect that has been completed for Dystopia 1.3. The new effect is a particle implementation to replace the current Tesla's secondary fire, which is a little more visible and visually appealing.

Also, this past week we have given a sneak peek of the new Green Ice effect to supporters. The purpose of this effect, other than giving a graphical upgrade to the shader that is currently used, is to offer a distinct difference between being jacked-out due to an EMP and jacked-out due to Green Ice. When a player is forced out of a JIP due to an EMP grenade, the normal embossed screen effect will play. Otherwise, being jacked-out due to hitting a Green Ice wall will cause this beautiful effect!

Finally, this month's effect-themed-update would not be complete without something not yet shown to the public! The Stealth effect used in 1.2 has been given a visual reboot for the next version. It has been the victim of replacement time and time again, each time using a pre-made effect from Half-Life 2. We hope that this upgrade gives some more aesthetic to the effect as well as giving a slight buff to the Implant.

Fans on Facebook may have also heard that Fedio recently joined the development team as a tryout developer. He has been working hard, making great strides upgrading his popular map, Fusion. We hope that his progress continues and that we can welcome him aboard the team soon, with some great shots of the new version of Fusion.

Also, since the last time we've had an update, a programming tryout of ours has joined the team. Arvind, a very talented programmer, has been brought up from a successful tryout period. He has already broken new ground, and helped solve a lot of the remaining Orange Box bugs preventing 1.3 from releasing. Please take some time welcoming him as well as our new programming tryout Wintermute to the team, and expect to see great progress made from both of them!

Stay tuned for the next update, when we show off the final goodies for 1.3 and announce a date to release for Supporter testing!

This mod would totally kick *** if it was on CryENGINE2, Source is way too old. Click on the link below and look at the images of Bladerunner created in it, one can only imagine how incredibly good Dystopia would be through it...:

That's seriously awesome, thanks for linking that! If CryENGINE2 is more flexible than the first then mods will be amazing. I suggest that people check that out.

Nice ideas but after being on the source engine for almost 5 years i can't see it jumping over to any other engine after all the work put into the mod. Just my opinion though.

Why is it that every source mod is now critized for running on source? Cryengine2 is a good engine but not enough people have it (system specs and such) on the flip side any true PC gammer has at least one source game allowing them to play any source mod

How can you presume to know that "not enough people have the system specs to run cryengine2"? Do you have hard evidence of the entire global population of pc specs to back this? I certainly don't, nor would anybody else. What a ridiculous statement.

If you want facts, here's a few...

Fact: Source IS old and outdated. Hammer is terribly inferior to Sandbox2.
Fact: DX11 has changed the playing field significantly.
Fact: Gamers will turn their backs to engines like Source in the coming year to embrace the new and update their systems accordingly.
Fact: and this is a sad one, Dystopia will continue to lose an incredible amount of players as it has done so in the last year unless the devs turn to moving it to UDK or the forthcoming CryENGINE platform and sell it.

I for one would be more than happy to shell out some cash to the developers for the end product to see that happen. These updates to OB will be fleeting towards sustaining the game's population. Only a break away from Source and significant update to a more robust engine will revitalise it.

"Fact: DX11 has changed the playing field significantly."
dude, seriously, DX11 haven't changed much. It's all BS and Microsoft ads. Everyone thinks that DX is the best, because most of games use it, but OpenGL 3 that exists for already a long time is far superiour to your DX (go to Wolfire Games blog and search for DX vs OpenGL). DX11 starts to be somewhat as good as OpenGL, but there are still progress to do.
A few opinions:
*Source is NOT AS old and outdated as you can imagine it: Source recives consistent engien upgrades throught out serveral games (like L4D2, etc..) but the main engine remains from EP2 --> 2007
*Source is VERY moddable and it is the engien with the most mods of Earth
*Source start to have a few limitations (as for Hammer), but it is still pretty decent
*STEAM!!! Source games are only for Steam, and that's why Source games are still "alive"
"Fact: Gamers will turn their backs to engines like Source in the coming year to embrace the new and update their systems accordingly."
HAhahahaha. You fail hardly with this statement. There are LOTS of Source games that are coming out --> Portal 2, HL2 EP3 (one day...), etc
Also, CSS is still the most played online FPS. I mean a REAL FPS, not the ****** MW2 with lag and no ******* dedicated servers. TF2 is also a huge success.
*CryENGINE 2 is so BADLY optimized, so if CryENGINE 3 is not any better, they both sucks for creating games for EVERYONE. There is nothing more annoying than not being able to run a game because it is too demanding. You will say: "Bla, bla, bla, buy a better PC noob". And I will answer: "I got a gaming rig, and I can play Crysis in everything maxed out on my 23" screen. But since I am a traveller, I also have a laptop, which is already 2 years old, and have limitations, so I am forced to play on lower settings to get a good fps" I cannot and DON'T want to buy a new laptop for obvious reasons. Continued...

To conclude my statement, a brief conclusion:
Source engine WILL exist for quite a long time because it receives frequent updates (once each 2 years in average), and it has a VERY strong modding community behind it. CryENGINE 3 is not out yet, so I would not speculate on how good it is, but so far CryENGINE 2 is badly optimized, and have a weak modding community behind it. Oh and almost forgot what makes a good game a GREAT game is not the graphics, but the gameplay (aka mods). Period.

EDIT: also compare the number of people who have at least one Source game and the number of people who have Crysis... Source have WAAAAAAY more gamers than Crysis.

@Kaneda13: Your asking me for proof? Your the one going on and on stating *facts* that your pulling out of thin air. Most people who play source mods usually do it on lower end pc's as they don't have the money to upgrade or get new high end games.

Everyone has there favorite engine and it just so happens that lots of people really favor Source for its modability, full sdk, plenty of tutorials on modding it, a great community, and lots of help from the people who made it. (have you ever emailed valve with a question? They got back to me in a day where as it took a different company a week)
