After about two years of intense, and often difficult, development, Dissolution is finally available for public release.
Often it has been difficult, but many more times it has been rewarding and it is great to finally be releasing this mod. Of course, this mod wouldn’t be what it is now without the help from my music composers and voice actors, all of whom have been excellent to work with. I thank them all for helping me with this project.
For those wondering what Dissolution is: Dissolution is a science-fiction, single-player mod that places great focus on fun gameplay, strong plot, interesting environments and dramatic characters. Dissolution encourages players to piece together its plot and does this through character interaction, audio logs (giving you various points of view) and environmental story-telling.
I hope you enjoy Dissolution and, regardless of whether or not you do, I welcome your feedback.
Looks really interesting, posted a release post about it here: Modsentry.com
Can't wait to play it!
Thanks!
Played it. It was absolutely great, the story was defiantly inspired by Bioshock though.
Thanks and the method of story telling was, yeah, I'll admit, but a large chunk of the story was written in 2006, before I had even heard of BioShock.
You say 'though' like it's a bad thing.
And a large part (read all) of Bioshock's gameplay was taken from System Shock 2.
This mod looks excellent by the way. Can't wait to try it!
Bioshock was made by the same companty that made System Shock, they just changed names after System Shock...
Best mod ever, not sure about the lack of zombies though. Maybe just add a couple for good measure? :)
@M.A.Blacklock - Thanks and maybe next time ;)
Yay for no zombies
(buried)
I found it a bit disappointing, so much that I stopped playing because I felt like I was playing a shameless clone of Bioshock, a game I rather disliked.
The engine doesn't really seem to do RPG elements well either, the only morbid conversation between you and an obvious demented person who needed to be put to death was entirely out of your hand, and you were simply forced to cooperate, making the experience far more linear, and, in my opinion, less enjoyable because the game tried to be Bioshock when it clearly can't.
Good effort nonetheless, but I think you should have a better story-writer involved in your next project.
The method of story telling was, indeed, inspired from BioShock. However, the story itself was mostly written way back in 2006. I wasn't trying to clone BioShock at all and the location, many of the characters and back plot was developed years before I played BioShock.
Sorry you didn't really like it, but I never was trying to please everybody. ;)
Note: It is also available as a zip archive here - Moddb.com.
I look forward to giving this a try! Thanks for your hard work! Is this just the hl2 engine or do I need one of the episodes installed?
Just hl2 will do. Let me know what you think afterward. ;)
i never really know the answer to this, since I played insurgency without HL2, can I play this since i have the Source SDK base or whatever?
You SHOULD be able to play the game so long as you have Source SDK Base, yeah. Here are a list of games that the mod should work with: Mods.potatonet.info
2 years in the making? Giving a try won't hurt.
Yup, this version took ages to get it into a state I was happy with. Although the original version was in the works between 2005-2006, so it's a project I've wanted to do for ages.
It's fantastic that it's done by only one person and it has such a quality . Well Good Job !
Thanks! Glad you liked it.
Congrats! I'm going to download and play this ASAP. Which isn't very soon by the way but I'll definitely play this :P
Hope you enjoy!
Where did this come from? Looks interesting, looking forward to trying it out.
Thanks! Let me know what you think of it after you've given it a go!
just downloaded it, and i think its great. But would be better if the brush maded models would actually be made in a 3d editor. With better texturing ofthe models. Example is the book and computer you see on the deskat start of the game. On first look its ugly, because its made of brushes. But overall, this mod is just awsome. Story telling is topnotch.
Thanks and glad you liked it! Will keep practicing the modelling. ;)
Personally I wasn't that much of a fan of this mod, it is worth playing but the gameplay, graphics and mapping just wasn't there. Even I can map these DOOM-like corridors better than who-ever did the mapping for Dissolution and don't even get me started on the voice acting. The only one who seemed to be any good was the VA of Wilson, and unfortunately he seemed like he was massively overacting. Gameplay-wise, the only gunfighting seemed to be shooting clumps of people standing in doorways with an auto-shotgun.
I did like the storyline and it did certainly feel like an extra-solar colony in the aftermath of a catastrophe, and I almost burst out laughing at the "crow"s. Thinking it was a nickname.
All in all, it's worth playing but i've been spoilt by other mods that have come out after the last few years. 6/10 (My criticism has harsh, no doubt about it)
Sorry to hear you didn't like it but thanks for trying it!
Nice work. I enjoyed it.
Good to hear! Thanks for leaving a comment.
It has been a great time spend playing the game thank you :) !
Thanks for playing and glad you liked it!
I love the mod ... I do have a question ! did you use darkbasic as part of your design or did you use something ease ???
Thanks! And I am not sure what you mean... if you mean the game making engine then I have never used it before (although I have heard of it).
Darkbasic is a game making engine ... you are welcome !! will there be a part 2 to the game !!
If the response is good enough to merit another!
I haven't finished yet, but I have some suggestions for improvements, if you plan to update. The textures all look really flat and samey. Try adding bump mapping and whatnot. Also try to avoid large perfectly flat areas in your maps. Break them up with random junk or dirt decals. Also, try using colored lights as described here: Developer.valvesoftware.com. The lights I noticed were all white. Lastly, the enemies are rather boring to fight. They don't talk, they're omnicient, they all look the same, and they all have the same tactic: chase and shoot. I could not get past certain places without lowering the difficulty to easy. You probably know all this already.
Thanks for playing and leaving your feedback!
Just have them come through door and cut them down as they file through
The mod is awesome, but:
- I didn't understand what the crow want to be.
- Animations can be improved.
- Enemies are a little bit hard to kill.
Anyway, good job, thanks for the time spended in the game! I really enjoyed it!
Glad you liked it! The crows were a mental enhancement project Wilson was running that, in his words, "got out of control".
hey Guys !! we want part 2 ... tell him so !!
Glad to see my namesake makes an appearance.
It's pretty decent, but it just feels like it needs some polish. (animations, props, etc.) I'd offer to help but I've got no idea how the source engine works.
reminds me of BIOSHOCK
Just finished playing this mod. Excellent work, if this is your first mod. The details were definitely payed attention to, and the refined look and feel of the environment was a huge bonus. The storyline had me following along hook line and sinker. This really reminded me of Bioshock, and did I mention the detailing?
The levels were very clean, but felt a little blocky like others mentioned. The lighting was sometimes a little offtrack in my opinion, it should of been darker at times. The combat was just.. eh, well, very repetitive, It's either crows or citizens. Some more melee oriented citizens, security, or those squid things (which I heard your saving) would of added more variety.
The maps were somewhat linear, some more sneaking around in vents or in hollow spaced walls would of been fun, don't be afraid to copy a little off other mods. There should of been more space-seeing, and a boss battle (Telekenetic human?).
Either than my horrible critic, this mod earned a spot in thy heart. I'm going to show a few of my rl friends this mod, and they can play it. The elegance and refinery truly brought me over and shows how mods can look with a little more detailing. 8.2/10 (Good Mod)
Thanks for playing and glad to hear you liked it. Don't forget to leave your rating on the profile and thanks very much for leaving feedback.
Just played through it. Finding those keycards really brought me back a few years, but in a good way.
Thanks for playing, glad you liked it. The keycards were meant to get people poking around and exploring, so glad you liked them.
The only bioshocky thing about it was the radio but then agian thats a common element in gmaes like these
I truly hated the fighting mechanics.
You pick up an ax, and immediately are given a pistol
Why bother with the axe? Its not like you run into melee enemies
Also during the junction power up, theres on place where the thing is at the end of the hall wal
Can't shoot through the bookshelves using them as cover
Also why do I get an AR on a place where mostly fight SMGs and pistols? I mean a shotgun and an AR are just a bit overkill I feel for the enemies encountered
Story telling is good i guess
oh yeah the crows are FING annoying more than they are worth
