Warcraft: Guardians of Azeroth. Developer Diary №9 - Military Renovation.

Posted by on

Hello faithful followers! There has been a vacuum in the world of Developer Diaries, but there is no need to wait any longer, for we arrive with our ninth installment: The Warfare Renovation.

In our last diary, we discussed the Old Gods, the Void, and how enjoyable it is to be corrupted ruthlessly by our dark masters. This time, we choose to focus on something closer to home and far more prevalent in the Warcraft universe: war. Whether it be the battles fought between man, dwarf, and troll or the battles fought across worlds between the Titans and the Void Lords, war crafts (pun intended) the very Warcraft world we have come to know and love.

As I write this, we have been developing a partial overhaul to the detailed belligerent aspect of Crusader Kings 2 in order to give the mod an even Warcraft-ier feel. This includes changing:

  • The base and special troops that fill your armies, as well as their stats
  • Types that certain religions and cultures have access to
  • Retinues available to a lord
  • Tactics that are chosen during battle
  • Leadership traits and abilities
  • Technologies and their modifiers
  • Many new unit models

All of the above have been rewritten and remade to better fit into the themes presented in the Warcraft: Guardians of Azeroth mod.

To start, all six base units including Heavy and Light Infantry, Light and Heavy Cavalry, Archers, and Pikemen have all been replaced with custom base units to better represent the average army composition you would find in Warcraft. Because of this, the following units are all found in normal holding levies.

Light Infantry → Casters -- Mages, priests, and other magical casters

Heavy Infantry → Infantry -- General footsoldiers and infantrymen

Pikemen → Aerial Infantry -- Gryphons, bats, and other common aerial troops

Light Cavalry → Cavalry -- Cavalry units including worg riders and nightsabers

Heavy Cavalry → Large Infantry -- Larger soldiers like Troll brutes and constructs

Archers → Ranged Infantry -- Ranged units including riflemen, and axe-throwers

orcs

These units will become the bulk of your military, instead of vanilla Crusader Kings 2 units. However, you aren’t only stuck with these units, as several custom special units have been developed as well! These units include troops such as Siege Machines, Dragons, Insect Swarms, Animals, and Archmages. These units become available through special cultural building chains and retinues.

With these new unit types and special troops comes brand new leadership traits, as well. Depending on the skills of your character and generals, certain leadership traits can be gained through combat or study. These traits include Archmagus, Marksman Captain, Taskmaster, and Cavalry Officer.

In addition to these new leadership traits and units comes 75+ custom cultural retinues such as the Kobold Candlebearers, Nerubian Spiderlords, and Quel’dorei Rangers. These have been created in the attempt to further diversify the armies between cultures and nations, leading to more interesting conflicts and map battles.

Furthermore, 110+ custom tactics have been added to accommodate the new range of units and special troops entering the mod. Several of these new combat tactics are dependent on new aforementioned commander traits as well as pre-existing class traits. Certain classes can enable special battle tactics on the commander’s respective flank that equate to short class ability bursts, like Shadow Word: Pain or Rain of Fire. With all of these new additions, we hope to create a beautiful and flavorful fusion of Warcraft themes and fantasy combat into Crusader Kings 2.

Though with such large swathes of changes, we have many days of testing and tuning ahead of us to ensure the renovation is clean and well-balanced. The release of these military changes will likely come in Patch 1.4 to ensure balance and cleanliness. Rest in peace, vanilla Crusader Kings 2

Thank you everyone for your continued support for Warcraft: Guardians of Azeroth, especially now that we are post-release! We continue to work to provide you a polished Warcraft-Crusader Kings 2 experience.
