Post news Report RSS Dawn of War 2 Modding Petition

We, the modding community, believe that mods add vitality and vibrancy to games. Furthermore they create communities of very loyal fans who are vital to a game's success. Dawn of War II should continue the great tradition of modding found in Dawn of War I. Without this heritage, Dawn of War II will be missing an integral factor that made Dawn of War I so fantastic.

The fact that you are reading this news article on this site means you are interested in mods. Perhaps not Dawn of War mods, but mods non-the-less. Help us, your fellow modders, realize our dream. The more companies that realize the value of the modding community, the better. Please sign this petition after reading my reasons for starting it below.

Petition: Gopetition.com

Dawn of War I is a brilliant example of how, if a company embraces modders, modders will embrace the company and grow passionate communities of fans. The communities that grew around the Dawn of War I mods prolonged Dawn of War's life and brought enjoyment to many fans. Many people bought Dawn of War specifically for the mods and Dawn of War's mod friendliness.

With this in mind it is strange that Relic would turn their back on the modding community. I believe Relic is very interested in what their fans have to say and so I've started this petition. All we ask for are developer tools after the game releases.

Also, this petition, while probably not changing Relic's minds now, hopefully will have positive future ramifications. Hopefully Relic will realize just how much modding means and how passionate we, the mod community are. If it does, then I will consider this petition successful. The fact that the modding community is willing to come together and sign this is a success in it's own right.

You didn't list a news source. If it's true, that is disappointing.

There is talk of it on the relic forums. The short version is no documentation and plugin licensing issues for the 6GB of dev tools. I wouldn't count out the Relic community modders, they started out reverse engineering relic's tools.

But if relic does reset the Essence Engine then that means that DoW 2 will be out near christmas time 2009 or 2010 which is not good and from what i have seen from the new multtplayer vid you will want to keep it un-modded and if relic does dicide to redo the whole engine then that will mean they will have to redo everything they have done: the videos, creating the beta everything so why can't you just leave a promising game alone
MP vid : Uk.pc.ign.com

PS: I agree with you on the point where DoW 1 with mods was great But times are changing so you will just have to live with it.

Good news, everyone! Shacknews.com

Jonny Ebbert: "We're looking at releasing modding tools and how much work it would entail. We didn't have the resources to do it for gold but that doesn't rule out the possibility of doing it in the future by any means. I'll definitely be looking at that when we finally finish the patch we're working on.

Making the map editor available would be the first priority. [An] object editor and attribute editor would be the next steps."

yes mod tools are needed as i do believe relic will never release an apacolypse version (on the tabletop version it is a 3000 pt fight minimum-full board as a space marine is 15 pts for perspective) and super heavy tanks and titans would be fun ta use :)

Damn straight..

The campaign could have had more done with it.

But I guess when I see a planetary type strategy game, I want sandbox instead of straight gameplay. And the optional missions get very repetitive..):
