Achtung! The enemy is trying to cross the river!

But they can’t!

Because no-one thought about connecting the battlefields with a supply line that the troops move along. As avid readers of our blog will know we are working hard on the campaign part of Heroes & Generals, and today I’ll try to explain a bit about how the setup of this magnificent map is done.

In earlier posts Reto.KenSolo & Reto.Chrestangen looked at “So what’s the deal with the campaign part of H&G?” and Campaign map, the next step, and recently we even talked about the (then) current status and also about moving planes around. BUT all of these fantastic things cannot happen without a map to move around on.

So, in order to setup the map you see on the campaign screen we use an in-house tool with the prosaic name “Warmap Editor”. In order to use the editor I first make sure that I have the latest version of the campaign map database and then I fire up the Warmap Editor.

From here I can navigate the map, move battlefields around, change them from using one map to another, add and re-route supply lines, determine the output from factories and a lot more.

Having players join the game from all over the place gives us the distinct advantage that whenever I set up something silly, like a town that’s big now, that might not even be built during the 1940s someone will tell me. This most welcome feedback, as you players out there collectively know a LOT about WW2. I then fire up the “Warmap Editor” and while some places that are towns might be factories in the game (for balancing purposes) it is easy for me to do a couple of changes and thus make the game better for everybody.

Here is a screenshot of the editor where I’ve just added a town/factory, and now I am placing it correctly and adding supply lines.
