An overview of the Federation faction in Ages of the Federation.

The Federation is an interstellar alliance made up of dozens member species, its core values being the freedom of its citizens enshrined in common law. The Federation has its roots in the Coalition of planets, a response to the growing Romulan threat that almost plunged the Alpha quadrant into an interstellar war. However even though it strengthened the unity of the four main powers (Humans, Vulcans, Andorians and Tellarites) the collapse of the Vulcan high command, and the reluctance of the Tellarites left Earth and Andoria to fight the Romulan themselves.

However post war Earth found itself with an armada capable of securing vast swathes territory. Realising an opportunity to cement its position, ambassadors with an invite from Earth, from all four worlds signed the Federation charter creating a new, more centralised power. The rapid expansion of the Federation though was soon to cause friction with its neighbours. Federation colony ships spread themselves into empty star systems with little consideration of claims from bordering powers. Colonialism was rampant and many felt internally and externally that Starfleets exploration arm was a means to exploit untapped resources.

This perceived ‘arrogance’ triggered the Klingons to attack the Federation world of Archanis in 2241 instigating the Four years’ war.

The mods cutoff date is 2245, the launch of the Constitution Class.

How will the Federation play?

The Federation will fell very different from the Federation in STA3 in the first stage. You’ll be fielding NX’s, Daedalus, Yorktown’s etc. These are beginning to get long in the tooth and your technology is lagging especially when contrasted to the Klingon Empire. You won’t be able to field a large fleet and you may find yourself on the defensive from the get go.

Though do not fret, you are after all the Federation so it’s time to get those Andorians to work on weapons and Tellarites to figure out trade better. As the game progresses the Federation will catch up, refitting its fleet to meet the threats it faces. New, larger and more advanced starships will steadily roll of the production line and by the late game you’ll be able go to toe to toe with any aggressor.

The Federation will also find itself in advantageous positions regarding trade and supply. Being able to use the massive resources of numerous Federation worlds allow it to expand quickly though as said earlier it may find it difficult to defend all of it. Your small fleets won’t be able to be everywhere at once and enemy raiding parties can smash your stations leaving you reeling as you fall behind. Whilst turrets might be able to knock out a BoP or two a single ship presence could make all the difference.

ROMULANS!

Mod progress

The mod has also been progressing at a steady pace. You may have noticed some Romulans now showing up as well as an expanded neutral roster. There is still a way to go, though AotF is starting to look like a mod that’s coming together. Max has also updated the particles to look punchier like we have in the renders and white hot glows certainly add to that.

Thanks for reading and stay tuned for more.

So this means Romulans won't be playable? I know it's of course mainly about the war against the Klingons, but I hoped the Romulans could be playable at least at a later point, as a kind of "alternative timeline" like what could be happened when Romulans use this situation and step into the conflict (similar to WW II). I really like all the 22nd and 23rd century ships. ;)

Don't worry the Romulans are very playable, even though the Federation border may have been closed they certainly had brushes with Klingons.

"The mods cutoff date is 2245, the launch of the Constitution Class." - This article.

"Ages of the Federation is a new project for Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion that starts in the year 2151 and goes all the way to the 2260’s." - Announcement article.

This has me a little disappointed to be honest. I was looking forward to having a couple squadrons of Constitution classes flying about. Given the mechanics involved in Sins, does this mean that the Constitution, D-7, and the like will be the Titans of their factions?
