After the original v3.0 of Blade of Agony has been taken down one month ago to calm things down, we are proud to announce the release of the updated version 3.1 which will be unleashed on Friday 9th 2021 - yes, already next week. As we have gone already into details about unfortunate coincidences and mistakable controversies in past articles, it's about time now to showcase what has been changed and improved.
The new version is not just about changes, it's also about completely new features, but let's take a look:
What's new for v3.1?
- New launcher (written from the ground, with additional options)
- Addons (a total of 12 gameplay mutators, featuring interesting replay-possibilities, loadable with the launcher)
- Ultra-Widescreen support (for 21:9 screens)
- New damage and powerup screen indicators (including indicators for grenades, damage direction, damage types, powerup cooldowns)
- Completely revamped fullscreen hud (powered by a new widget system, with transparent backgrounds)
- New additional boss battles and enemies
- Achievements system (total of 34, achievement board in the briefing room)
- Performance improvements (higher fps rates on weaker machines)
- Replacement and improval of edgy and sensitive content (e.g. removal of historical references towards the Holocaust, character renaming, content replacement)
- Improvements to make the player-placed mines more useful
- Sprite improvements (additonal rotational sprites for 1-directional enemies, hires sprites for numerous lowres variants)
- Options menu simplification (making it more accessable to people outside the GZDoom community)
- Includes latest stable GZDoom 4.6
- Countless bugfixes, adjustments and improvements (over 400 Github commits)
Is this enough to keep you psyched? Well, we are, and we can't wait to release the new version of Blade of Agony to you - it was worth the wait and it is worth to play it (again).

Almost none of BOA's content should be censored. The only change that ever needs to happen is renaming the Randi Heit character (unless he can garner consent from Marisa Heit to use her birth name).

Partially. We removed references that point towards specific ethnic and religious groups as it simply does not matter for the story to be told. Details about this can be read a few replies below.

John Romero’s Twitter team took his tweet about Blade of Agony offline because people wrote him that Blade of Agony has homophobic and antisemitic content.
The web hosting page wanted to take down the official page because someone accusing us for Neonazism and for unconstitutional content for German rights.
Beyond that, developers from the team got personal emails and letters, insults, threats and even worse and this simply goes too far.
If you want to blame these changes to anyone, it’s definitely not the of developers to target your disappointment at. We are sorry that this happens but still this is a game, we wanted to enjoy the development and we wanted to entertain you. But some things that happened went to far and we had to act and change. If it’s for the better or the worse? It’s up to you to decide. But don’t blame it on us.

The question simply is: What is it worth to stick to minor details and risking huge personal problems?
We didn't change the whole game. We simply asked ourselves: What is needed to tell the story and set up the situation, and what is not.
The world exhibition in Paris had historical content with antisemitic pictures to achieve a certain authenticity and show off how twisted the nazi ideology was.
You can keep that and risk issues, but is it needed to tell the story? It is not. It doesn't make much difference and this is why we removed such content.
Same goes to the camp. Yes, there have been jewish prisoners, but there also have been christs in there, polish people as well as germans. But does it matter to tell the story? Is a jewish life different than a christ or a moslem? It is not - and that's why it doesn't matter. It's not "whitewashing" (or whatver it can be called in that context), it simply does not matter.

If the web hosts wants to try to censor your site, you should consider hiring an attorney and taking their spineless ***** to court for litigation. Alternatively, you should give Webflow or Wordpress a chance.

I regret not waiting for a quality-of-life update like this and instead playing 3.0 right off the bat, yet on the other hand, I am now glad that I did have the opportunity to play the game as envisioned by the developers.
I realize it's not your fault, but you are also the only public entity that most of us see in this conflict. It's not "person X Y" vs. the BoA team, it is "some anonymous voices" vs. the BoA team. You had the advantage from the beginning of being sincere. Nobody stood for you, but nobody also knew what was happening.
Compare it with the Ion Fury outcry. Some would say that their "accusations" were far worse than yours, but all the developers did afterwards was promise to address it, and then when the new update came, they simply said that they will not change the game beyond what they envisioned. Why? Because by that time they had already have the support of the normal people who just wanted to play the game and not criticise everything and everyone. We came here too, but only after the decision was made. We hadn't known before.

Hey guys, just wanted to say thank you for all the hard work and the amazing game. I didn't yet get to play very far (little time these days), but I'm really happy you keep supporting it and came out with this patch and new version.

When people start threatening to dox you, make you lose your job and it can affect your family and friends that have no involvement with the project, that is going too far, the dev did the right thing, just doesn't mean its a good one or that they are proud even. But when you're an adult, you have more to lose than just being burned online.

Despite the changes which irritated so many. To be honest? Not much is censored after doing a side by side comparison. I don't blame you since you did what you had to do which is understandable. Just so you know that the one who got offended by your work and demand changes; they don't have to play the mod, this is your work, your vision, you don't owe them anything. Other than that you've made an awesome piece of work.
I had a copy of 3.0, went through quite a bit of it.
By comparison, 3.1 has more/better content and runs a lot smoother.
