Here a side-by-side comparison of the Nordic and Imperial armour in-game (Note that the Imperial one is for the moment unshaded and looks awful.)
I was inspired by the Skyrim Iron Armour for the Nords, and the concepts for Skywind Tesrenewal.com for the Imperials.

In the end are you going to go for the imperial look from Oblivion or Skyrim, or somewhere inbetween?
Some mix of the more Roman Skyrim and the more Plate Oblivion, yeah. And the Morrowind purple colour scheme.
Sounds excellent, can't wait to see the finished product :)
