This month Ice and Fire, a major new update to the in-depth classic fantasy mod Valar Morghulis, has been released! The major new content release most prominently includes two entire new factions – the villainous Bolton family in the frozen wildernesses of the North, and the bow-wielding, extravagantly dressed traders of the Summer Islands, south of Westeros and Essos.
In Westeros, the Boltons add a whole new dynamic to the starting situation. Far from the Stark family having a steady grip upon the frozen lands, the vengeful Boltons start within striking distance of Winterfell, forcing the Starks to watch their back. The same is true for the Night’s Watch, who must now not only hold the wall against the wildling and walker invasions to their north but look out for Bolton forces trying to grab the wall’s fortresses and secure their grip on the far north of Westeros. With heavy spear-armed infantry ready to trudge through the cold wastes, the Boltons are ready to rule from the Dreadfort once more as their ancestors did many years ago.
In the sun-baked south, the Summer Islands add new threats and opportunities for the Martells of Dorne and for the ancient city-state of Volantis especially. Their navies can provide a serious threat to the south coasts of both Westeros and Essos, and the islands can be tempting prey for Volantene, Dornish, or Pentoshi navies looking to secure additional bases from which to reach the other continent. Without a solid infantry backbone, commanding Summer Island troops can be a challenge, but their archers and chariots give them a fast-moving, fluid fighting style that can at its best run rings around their northern foes.
Beyond the new factions, there’s more new content too. In particular, the game now runs with RTW Alexander, there are now special character portraits for many of the canon characters in-game, map changes with additional regions and settlements added, and significant balance tweaks including a significant strengthening of the dragon unit. With all that – what are you waiting for? The world of Westeros and Essos awaits you, swords at the ready…

I'm very excited to play this game, however the game is crashing quite often for me. I attempted the Targaryen campaign and at 321AC it crashes every time I try to end the turn. I also tried the Starks and it continues to randomly crash at the end of random turns. If this could be fixed in the next update that would be extremely appreciated. Loving the game and I know this could be one of the top mods ever.
FINALLY someone actually done it!
FINALLY this mod includes everything; the wall, beyond the wall, the Others, AND Essos, AND dragons AND the music from the shows.
I quite enjoyed that little time I actually played it, as there are some problems. I played a few turns with the Targaryens, and played a number of custom battles. Here are the things I came across:
- For some reason, I had so much lag and so low FPS, that battles became literally unplayable without them looking like supermario. I turned shadows off, set the resolution lower, set every other thing to low or lowest (except unit detail, which I like to leave at highest). Still, battles are unplayable.
(Just for measure: original RTW and other RTW mods' battles run just fine)
- The first thing I did on the campaign map was to start sieging Yunkai. After I starved them out and they attacked me, I got into the battle, the battle lagged like hell, so I just quit. After I quitted the battle and it said I was defeated, ___I actually took the city___. My army took the city, while being defeated, without a single dead or damage to the city.
- Some units still say "For Rome!", etc. when ordered to attack.
- Some traits of leaders still say thing like "Spartan", etc., from the original game. Overall, there are a lot of unfinished things in the mod.
Some minor-ish things:
- The unit variety in the main Westerosi houses is rather non-existent. Most of the time they all have the very same units in different colours, with a few exceptions where a house may actually have 1 unique unit.
- All houses have the unit "Guard of King's Landing". I don't see the logic in this, but that doesn't necessarily mean that there isn't any regarding this choice.
- You get notifications about the White Walkers. For one, that they became the richest faction. I imagine - although I know nothing about modding - they could have the same status as rebels, so the player doesn't get notified about them.
- Targaryens are quite overpowered. Phalanx, heavy cavalry, heavy infantry, dragons, horse archers... I don't list this as a problem, I just noticed. They would definitely smash all Westerosi houses in a blink of an eye. Quite unbalanced.
- Regarding dragons: they are technically elephants. While there is no problem with that, you can also hear the elephants noises when the dragons are present in a battle. I would either silence them or give some dragon noises from the show / wherever else. I wonder if it is possible to re-create their fire breath using that thing that is poured onto the enemy when they stand under the castle's gatehouse (sorry, missing England vocabulary). If it would be possible to add that to the dragon's mouths (perhaps recolour them to fire-ish), it would effectively create fire-breath.
- White Walkers should not rout. At all. They are dead. Also, in my opinion, they should either be completely silenced or given some zombie-noises or similar. Either way, we shouldn't hear them saying the barbarian factions lines. Perhaps it would also worth making them stronger overall, and weaker to fire arrows.
Hope I can help in the further development of this mod. It has so much potential to become the best GOT mod.
The low fps is unfixable as it's the Rome engine being too old for your new system, the only fix is to get a decent pc from ten years ago. The units that refer to themselves as Spartans is another limitation of the engine, i doubt it could be fixed
I was just thinking about the dragon thing and was wondering if instead of elephants they could be caterpults, I also have had the low fps thing.
I can't seem to figure out how to install the mod with the gold edition on steam. Could someone help out?
The mod is for the Alexander DLC.
I'm surprised! I can't wait to play this soon.
