But the closer they are, the more sense they have, like concentrating firepower on less area, easier aiming, better use of free space in the main turret, etc.
Not to mention putting stuff with that much recoil away from the centre of the turret should lead to targeting issues.
And damage to the turret itself.

Mammoth tanks always had close together barrels. What's wrong with 2 barrels? There are 4-barreled AA tanks, twin-barreled howitzers, and even twin-cannon tanks.
