The Whisper is a single player third person survival horror experience that takes inspiration from the Resident Evil 4 beta called "Hookman" by the fans for its environment, mixing it with elements from Haunting Ground and Eternal Darkness.

I think, tho, that the CAUTION word is not the best approach. Inmersion, on this kind of games is very important. If I were you, I'd add something on the character, an small... thing that changes colour (like the girl from Jurassic park: trespasser) or perhaps an small icon that changes when health is changed, and then fades away.

I thought about Silent HIll 2 and the RE4 beta when I made this choice. The "Caution" word wont be always displayed of course, its like the red cross from SH2, when your health is high again it'll disappear.
Since there's no other way to check your health condition I think its fine like this \ atleast for now.
Btw, I think I'll probably remove the bullet count also, to help immersion as you said. Could be displayed in other ways

Also the Dead Space approach (health displayed as something attached to the player) dont convince me enough

You should add "jam" around the screen like in Modern Warfare 2 ;)

Btw you could have a system similar to this; Caution appears in an orange colour to indicate that the player should be careful, then when more damage is sustained, danger in red appears which clearly tells the player to get some health or GTFO! :P Just my 2$

Oh right, I would have said the Caution is more yellow, might want to make it more orange without being too red if you get my drift :)

You shouldn't do things ala SH2, otherwise you'll end up copying already made stuff. Not saying it's bad, but it could be better. If I were you, I'd use images as much as I can. For the brain, they take less time to process (around 150ms) instead of text (190ms-400ms) source: Springerlink.com.

Displaying text shouldn't be confused as some kind of style. Back then, due limitations, games weren't allowed to show lots of images, so, they used text instead. Nowadays, we can go nuts :)

Its a sprite sys, of course I'm not using text XD I'm not that crazy. Its animated too
And btw, I'm taking huge inspiration from SH2 and the RE4 Beta material, this system was showed in the beta (whch never came out) so technically its not copy\paste. I dont want to copy from anyone else though. There's plenty of time to change things :)

Description

Sexy corridor in third person, with the current HUD.

Your health condition will be displayed when in caution mode and in danger mode. The player is currently in aiming mode. If you wont be in aiming mode, you wont be able to shoot. When you're in aiming mode though, you wont be able to move.
Reload is always possible. If you'll ever find enough ammo, of course.

The flashlight is held in Richard's left hand.
