The Trapdoor is a portrait of Jonathan Burke, a lonely servitor to an unseen and diabolical master. As isolation, incarceration, and debasement inevitably erode what's left of his sanity, his repressed memories begin to surface and the insidious menace of the trapdoor grows in his mind.
Now re-released in 2024, for ATDD 1.5!
Ten years later, there's a new version of The Trapdoor!
This new version (3.1, "Reopened") is specially rebuilt for ATDD version 1.5, and may not be as you remember.
Original key features:
New and redesigned for "Reopened":
The easiest way to get and play this new version is on Steam Workshop... but if you wanted to read that you wouldn't be here! :P So, there's a version here on ModDB, but you need to make sure you have Amnessia: The Dark Descent version 1.5, or it will not work. If you're ready, you can grab it here.
Since a recent update to the Steam version of Amnesia, Steam users need to launch CS mods differently. If you're having difficulties, here's the easiest...
Sadly The Trapdoor didn't make it into the Top 100, but if you're still interested, here are five reasons why The Trapdoor is different.
Version 2.0, the irrevocably final version, is out now. Complete with 3 re-play modes and all major bugs fixed.
Version 1.3 (probably final update; tweaks, minor fixes and 3 new gameplay modes) will be available on the downloads tab soon. In the meantime you can...
Two small fixes building on version 3.1. For more info, see the notes for 3.1.

This older version is included for legacy only (it's also a smaller download). Version 2.0 is probably the one you want.
I am impressed how this game looks. I'm going to do a let's play on my channel of this game. I will try to leave a link in the comments when it is out. If you'd like to see other videos check out my channel.

Wow, much appreciated. I PM'd you on YouTube.
I can't get it working. I extract the files in the Amnesia folder but nothing happens. I also extract the .bat file. What is the problem?
Hi Sharkraster. Did you put both the trapdoor folder and the bat file in the same place as Amnesia.exe and then run the bat file?
Well I'm completely stuck, there is not that much clue given, because I'm already confused in the second map, first I was like who the hell is "Boney" then I realized it was that skull, well after long back and forth, wasting time... I finally managed to find that "Boney skull" then go back and placed in that pedestal so I get that skull on second map. Well, there is that trapdoor and now no idea where to go now, I have seened two elevators like coming up and down, but really clueless what I supposed to do with those...
It's really confusing to progress, it's good so far, but annoying to progress..
Give me a lot of tips what I need to do, because this is really frustrating, but also challenging which is good and different.
Hi Humiliator, glad you're enjoying the challenge... At least I *think* you're enjoying the challenge, lol.
Don't give up! You've already worked some things out. Lets recap what you've learned so far...
You've worked out who Boney is and you've realised that he's important for keeping Burke sane. You've noticed that there are special plinths for putting Boney on. You've found at least one of Burke's notes and hopefully learned that he has an unseen master somewhere up above who he has to feed. You've also found some elevators that go up into the castle, which have apertures big enough to put an object in, but not big enough for Burke to go up himself. Good work so far.
So, what to do next? Here are some general tips.
Make use of the momentos (aka quest log) in the journal.
Listen to Burke's muttering ... It's not all crazy nonsense.
Maybe it would help to watch an episode or two of the original carton that inspired the story of the mod: Youtube.com They're only 5-10 min long.
Finally, if you're still absolutely stuck, check out the kitchen area near the trapdoor... Is there anything there that could help you feed your master? If you're not sure, trying picking things up, you might get a response.
Let us know how you get on. Good luck!
The bug is now fixed. Please checks the news / downloads.
BTW, I'd be interested to know if anyone who has played The Trapdoor (my mod) is a fan of or remembers The Trap Door (the original cartoon that inspired it) - and if so, what are your thoughts?
Hi! I'm a bit stuck. I've given the monster three pigs so far: the one from the kitchen, the one from the ceiling, and the one from the alter. I'm guessing the next one is maybe buried in that mushroom garden since there's a spot for Boney, but I don't know what to do here? I've looked around and tried using the shovels - nothing. :\ And then I went and double checked all the other areas just in case I missed anything. There's still a locked door in that kitchen hallway by the wine room. Do I need to get that open somehow? A hint would be most helpful. Thank you!
SPOILER: Well done for getting pig from the altar back to the kitchen without falling down in the crypt... but maybe there's more down there than instant death...?
BTW, MidoriEyes, some folks below have kindly reported a bug, unfortunately it means you'll either have to start again or copy in a save game file that I'll upload shortly ... if I was you I wouldn't play any further just now until you've got the fix, which I'm just about to upload now.
I have a question about the altar. Is there an easier (read: FASTER) way to get the pig across. I have already done it but seeing as I'm going to have to start over, I'd like to know if there is a better way.
There are a few ways to do that one. It is possible (but not easy) get the pig across the gap without it falling down, then you could drop it down the ladder beside the garden. Try building your own coffin-bridge. (Also, while you can't *throw* the pigs, the engine will let you swing them sideways and then release the mouse to send them flying over your shoulder. It's something I would have changed if I'd been able, but since you're going to the effort of replaying, which I really appreciate, and since I feel a bit guilty about having to do the fix, I thought I'd let you in on that ;o) Just becareful not to lose your piggy. )
Thank you.
More pig! MORE PIG!
