For me it's important to have your son by your side on the battlefield. If you are a lord/king, for e.g, you will have some of your elite troops with you protecting you, with your son by your side he will be in no better place than that. But forgetting that whole part, in a world like that where eventually any dwarf, elf or man will end up at least in one battle, even if just against a small group of orcs or bandits, it's better for you to prepare your children for it , and if Elrond has put his sons in the frontline it's because he trusts their habilities/skills in combat, they can defend themselvs and others.
it's a little bit hard to explain in english and through comments , it would be easier to explain in my native language and while talking (instead of writing)
