The Great War is a modification for Company of Heroes meant to bring the war two decades earlier. This mod focuses on the later years of the First World War. Currently the two teams will be the British Expeditionary Force against the German Empire, however with time the team will try and bring some more nations in, such as France and Austria-Hungary. This mod will focus or realism but keep the game balanced enough to make it enjoyable. Things to look for in the mod are the famous artillery strikes and the infamous gas attacks. Trenches will provide vital cover for infantry while tanks will roll over the battlefield and instil fear into the enemy troops.
Description
This file contains the full version of The Great War 1918 v1.2 in a self-extracting archive. It will extract all the files needed to play the modification on your computer. An INSTALLATION GUIDE can be found under tutorials.

You can use both. However the steam version is a better choice as it is up to date. The retail version requires looking for patches online, as the mod is only supported for versions 2.602 and up.
In the new factions can you put Australia as one of them becasue we push the Germans back to the hindenburg line and with this you can get AIF Troops. Im just putting ideas out there.
There are AIF skins for the British faction. It's selected in the rewards menu in the skirmish lobby.
There won't be a separate race for the AIF or the Canadians or any other contingent that fought as part of the British Expeditionary force on the Western Front (yes, "as part"; they had their own army corps, but were still subordinated to BEF armies and army groups) as they would just be clones of the current BEF race, with the same weapons, vehicles, doctrines, etc..

True, mate. That was my initial thought back at the start when I discovered this incredible mod, but there is so much work involved in making each faction. I have really enjoyed the mod as it is. Basically this is all I use my desktop PC for :)
Don_durandal and the team have my utmost respect, and the mod keeps getting better.
I think the AI behaviour should be changed to be more defensive, and leaving some areas to become no mans land.
i have the retail version of the game and followed the installation to a tee, but nothing seems to change. will there be a difference in the main menu or do i have to actually play to see the changes?
You have to search online for the CoH patch updates. You need to upgrade your game to at least 2.602 for the mod to work.

So do I need opposing front too or can I just buy the origional company of heroes. Or can I download company of heroes 2.
The mod works with any of them. CoH, CoH: Opposing Fronts and Tales of Valour are all the same game. They just unlock different content.
However if you buy the retail versions of CoH or CoH:OF you will have to look online for patch 2.601. It is required to play the mod.
CoH 2 is a different game and the mod doesn't work with it.
the mod folder not have the executable :(
As stated in the tutorial, the mod is started by using a shorcut on your desktop. There is no executable, as it goes through the CoH executable.

Just overwrite the files when extracting.

i do everything that is required to set up the great war mod, but when i run it, it launches the normal CoH game insted of the mod, any idea why?
You need to update Company of Heroes to version 2.602
I guess you're not using the Steam relaunch version of CoH. The retail version is no longer supported (since THQ went bankrupt) so you will have to look for the patches online.
