Finally after 6 plus years The Gate II is finished !!!!

Hey guys just letting you know beta testing is complete and The Gate II is ready, just finishing up a few minor things and problems and very soon I will release it...

I have only found 2 sites on the entire net that will host The Gate II as its a very big mod, as its a full conversion of Halflife 2 all the sounds, textures, models etc etc are different and hence it takes up room. The full size of The Gate II zipped will be around 5-6 gigabytes! I told you it was big !!! this causes problems with actually getting sites to host it, I know Mod db its self has a limit on uploading too like most.

So any suggestions anyone has about sites that will host The Gate II would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks for your patience, I hope you will enjoy the game.

Awesome, looking forward to this large mod :)

You can always upload a torrent, Black Mesa and Underhell released official torrents I believe.

Please make this finished mod uploaded to Steam (in addition to torrent) and get into the Greenlight.

I'm pretty sure you can't just simply 'make the mod uploaded to Steam' :P I think it first needs to gain quite some popularity and attention.

I will follow this discussion with great interest because i have the same problem. Although my mod doesn't have a size of 5 to 6 GB's it still also is to large for most mirror sites. A torrent is one way to go, but only works when you leave you computer on 24/7, and, when other people download and keep seeding. Otherwise it will not work either.
And the free sites that do offer free uploads have such a low download speed that it can take up to 6 to 10 hours to download 3 GB's.
So, creating large mods is great, but releasing them is a real pain in the ***.
As said, i will follow this.

And ofcourse will i play your project as soon as it is released.
Much success whished,

Leon

yeah seen that site conchobhar thanks.. ill try it..

Yeah spy-maps i know what you mean with the hosting issue.. its a right pain, good luck with your mod btw..

the gate II turned out larger than i had thought, but most of the size is down to the textures. the mod also has 60 plus maps which of course is also bumping up the size, it was not my intention to use so many maps initially but had no choice to tell the story.

the current plan with the gate II is to upload it in 3 parts to mod db, and also to mega.co.nz, and also to create a torrent for those who want it, dont mind leaving my computer on tbh. Whats mod db like for downloading? is it slow or what?

thanks for all your suggestions..

Hi,
you could split it in about 200mb parts and upload it to Zippyshare.com there is no captcha and also fullspeed for free (1.6mb is my isp max).

Also you could split it into 1GB Parts (or even 2GB? not sure about the limits) and upload it to Firedrive.com .

Also Sockshare.com is a free fullspeed (or good speed) hoster.

Then you can also do it as a .dlc file and load it into Jdownloader2, the program downloads all the parts itself and easy to use.

Or you could do it like the forgotten hope 2 mod team, they split their mods in 2 Setups and upload them as you can see here Moddb.com

So for 6GB Mod you could split it in 3x2GB Setups or Rars/Zips/7z Files

If this mod is uploaded to Moddb, please split it into 3 x 2GB parts. Also why wasn't the file compressed to RAR format? I'll bet it will be way less than 5 GB to download if downloaded as a RAR file and in split parts.

Great suggestions Marin3!!
Thanks for that. Personally i prefer download sites above torrents because then you can see how many people download your mod (and we all want to know how much it is downloaded when you have been working on it for so long).

About your question Cjb, i am not sure how high the download speed of Moddb is, but i seem to remember that it isn't that high but i could be wrong.
Guess we just have to test and see which mirror has the highest download speed because a lot of people stop downloading when it takes hours.

I use Gamefront as mirror for my personal files;
Gamefront.com

Keep in mind that a lot of sites have a rule of at least the file has to be downloaded ones in 30 days, otherwise it will be deleted. In the beginning this is no problem, but after say a half year to a year you need to check each month if it is downloaded.

So maybe its best to cut the mod up in segments and keep it here on Moddb. Here it will stay for ever.
Leon
